Publishing is an important business for academics and people write for various reasons- altruism, career advancement, job promotion, fulfilling a minimum requirement for annual performance and so forth. Dissemination of research findings is an essential part of the scientific research process, and writing in scientific journal is a means of communication of the research findings. Thus, for academics, the old adage “publish or perish” has never been truer. The Workshop is held as a response to meet individual and institution’s needs to enhance research and acquire specific knowledge and skills to write and publish scientific manuscript in high-impact journals.
This workshop targets healthcare professionals, junior researchers, post-graduate students and academic staff who conduct research and need to develop successful scientific writing skills in Health Informatics. In this workshop, participants will be taught the importance of paper writing and publishing, types of scientific writing, the structure of a scientific paper- Title, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, References and Acknowledgement, dealing with language and understand the processes of paper submission and peer-review, dealing with paper revision and rejection and publication ethics. Apart from lectures, participants will be involved in practical group exercises on various components of a scientific paper under the guidance of the workshop facilitator, covering the nuts and bolts of writing and publishing. The Workshop hopes to boost participant’s self-confidence to initiate and sustain their scientific writing efforts.
About the Convenor:
Dr. Usman Iqbal, PharmD, MBA, PhD, FACHI, AFCHSM, FRSPH is an Assistant professor at College of Public Health, Global Health and Development Department, Taipei Medical University. He is Health IT consultant and Principal Investigator at International Center for Health Information Technology (ICHIT), Taipei Medical University.
Dr. Usman got his PharmD degree from Pakistan, MBA in HealthCare Administration and PhD in Health Informatics from Taipei Medical University, Taiwan on full scholarship.
He is a Fellow of Australasian College of Health Informatics (ACHI), Salzburg Global Seminar and Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM) as well as Fellow of Royal Society of public Health (FRSPH). Member of Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA). Dr.Usman is also an Editor - International Journal for Quality in Health Care journal (IJQHC) from Oxford University Press (OUP) which is an official journal of International Society of Quality in Health Care (ISQua). Asia Pacific Associate Editor – Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine Journal (CMPB) – Elsevier and Editor for the Journal of Clinical Oncology-Clinical Cancer Informatics from American Society of Clinical Oncology (JCOCCI - ASCO).
Dr.Usman also an international faculty and facilitating joint collaborative course between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University and Taipei Medical University. Dr.Usman has been invited to give talks, facilitated tutorials, chaired several conference sessions and mentor the events like Hackathon and Datathon. He has been an author of several peer reviewed scientific articles in leading journals, book chapters and participated in international medical conferences with focus on Health Data and Informatics, Health Information Technology and Patient Safety, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, Health Care Quality and Management, Global Health, and Health Systems Improvement and mHealth/Telemedicine. Moreover, he was very active in initiation of collaborations with scientific partners and to establish projects in remote poor resource settings of developing countries.
