2:40 pm - 3:10 pmA Service Cost Management Approach to IT Costs
Karen Garcia, IS & T Chief of Staff, BMC Software, Inc.

Developing IT budgets and managing the cost of providing services has always been an exercise in financial accounting, which made sense when IT managed most of the services it delivers. But with cloud computing and SaaS models taking hold, IT must now consider its cost structure from different perspectives. How much does it cost to deliver critical IT services such as e-mail and a corporate web presence? How much could an external service provider lower those costs? The answer can be provided by Service Cost Management.

In this session, Karen Garcia, VP & Chief of Staff for Information Services & Technology in BMC’s IT organization, along with Steve O’Connor, VP and General Manager of IT Business Management will explain IT Service Cost Management and provide an expert perspective on the opportunities IT offers. They will also discuss BMC’s own experiences in rolling out IT Service Cost Management within its own organization.

Kevin Horner, CIO, Alcoa, Inc.

The global recession has been a very rough ride for Alcoa, one of the world’s largest aluminum makers. A steep decline in demand for its products, along with a dramatic reduction in commodity prices globally, forced the 120-year-old company to close plants, sell off unprofitable business units, slash its work force and struggle through a prolonged economic downturn. Overall revenues of $26.9 billion in 2008 tumbled to $18.4 billion by 2009. Yet CIO Kevin Horner has an inspiring story to tell about business transformation and agility, as well as some surprising lessons learned about managing IT costs while still delivering vital business services. There’s good growth and there’s bad growth. Good growth creates a platform for the sustainable health of a successful enterprise, while bad growth creates silos, an unstable foundation and long-term problems that plague even the best of companies. Which kind of growth is your company looking for? What role will IT leadership play in accelerating that? CEO Chip Conley, author of “PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow,” will talk about how he grew his company from one motel in the ghetto to the second largest boutique hotelier nationwide. In this inspiring opening keynote, he will focus on how his IT department (working with other critical business units) became a pivotal part of that growth initiative and how technology – both internally and customer-facing – became a fundamental differentiator for Joie de Vivre Hospitality’s success story.

James Jeude, Director, DWBI Consulting and Analytics, Cognizant Business Consulting
Mark Livingston, Senior Vice President, Global Practice Leader, Cognizant Business Consulting

Data is now ubiquitous and growing in volume every day.  This data explosion, along with continuing high levels of investment in data management, compels CIOs and their IT organizations to demand that data’s underlying value be joined with an analysis of optimal decision-making. That process, which we call “decision valuation,” quantifies the costs and benefits of competing approaches.  Cognizant’s Business Consulting and Enterprise Analytics Practice advises on this critical topic through practical expertise. In this session we will cover:

  • a taxonomy for evaluating “decision valuation” opportunities
  • a set of questions to ask, in order to achieve optimal answers
  • a framework for calculating the business value of analytical insights
  • a number of examples of data analytics and decision valuation in action.
