Jay is a senior lecturer in civil engineering at the University of the West of England in Bristol, where his principal teaching areas are fluid mechanics and surveying; his research interest is in hydro-power, particularly its use by the water industry. He joined UWE in 2005 having worked for 3 years as a tension structure engineer and before that, 4 years in the water industry. He completed his fluid mechanics PhD in 1997 at the University of Warwick, which concerned the pressure transient simulation of condensers in cooling water systems
