Deborah Butler, Executive Vice President Planning and Chief Information Officer,
Norfolk Southern


Thirty-six year career with Norfolk Southern Corporation and its predecessor companies, including 29 years in the company’s operating department in Atlanta, Ga. Appointed Executive Vice President Planning and CIO, based in Norfolk, Va, in June, 2007. Current responsibilities include Norfolk Southern’s Information Technology, Strategic Planning, Telecommunications, Real Estate and Sustainability areas, as well as leadership of the company’s Future Track initiatives to drive service and productivity.

She is a graduate of Agnes Scott College (Bachelor of Arts in English Literature) and has advanced her education at Northwestern University (Advanced Transportation Management), Fuqua School of Business, Duke University (Executive Education) and Harvard Business School (Advanced Management Program).

She is Immediate Past Chair of the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board (National Academies), Past Chair, National Grain Car Council (Surface Transportation Board), Past Chair, Women’s Transportation Seminar, Atlanta Chapter, and Past Chair, American Council of Railroad Women

Her Norfolk Southern Corporate affiliations include serving as Chairman, Board of Directors, Thoroughbred Technology & Telecommunications, LLC, and on the Board of Directors, TTX Company.

She has served as Commissioner, Norfolk Airport Authority, as well as on the Board of Trustees at Virginia Wesleyan College, Board of Trustees at Agnes Scott College, on the Executive Committee of Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trustees of the Chrysler Museum of Art, Board Member, “10 for 10” Member, and Funding Council Member with the United Way of Hampton Roads Women’s Leadership Council. She is chair of the Executive Advisory Council, Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University, a Board Member of the Economics Club of Hampton Roads, a member of Hampton Roads Maritime, Ports and Logistics Advisory Council, and Treasurer, Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church.

Recognition includes "2013 Woman of the Year" with the League of Railway Industry Women, 2014 Woman of Distinction (Science and Technology) from YWCA South Hampton Roads, The “Power 75” List – 2012, 2013, 2014 Hampton Roads Business Journal, and has been recognized by Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast as the 2014 “Famous Former”.
