AFPHM Supervisor Workshop

Date: Sunday, 15 May
Time: 10.30am - 3pm
Room: Panorama 1

The Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) has recently implemented a series of Professional Development initiatives for supervisors of College Trainees. The leading component of these initiatives is a series of three skills-based workshops. In addition to these workshops, specialty-specific training is also required. In order to address the specific needs of Public Health Medicine (PHM) supervisors, a complementary workshop was developed - Supervisor Professional Development Program 'Plus One' Public Health Medicine (SPDP 'Plus one' PHM). The objectives of this workshop include:

  • Engage in a community of practice with other AFPHM supervisors
  • Recognise the responsibilities and obligations of supervisors in the Public Health Medicine (PHM) training program
  • Locate and interpret information provided in the PHM training program handbook
  • Fulfil the supervisor obligations of the Learning Contract and identify and manage underperforming trainees
  • Explain the purpose and function of formative and summative assessments in the PHM training program

SPDP 2: Teaching and Learning in Healthcare Settings

Date: Monday, 16 May
Time: Part 1: 1.30pm - 3pm and Part 2: 3.30pm - 5pm
Room: City Room 4

The main themes of the workshop include dealing with the many challenges supervisors face: lack of time, pressure from the increasing number of trainees, and balancing service commitments with teaching. This workshop then focuses on a range of teaching strategies to deal with these challenges including planning for learning and teaching multi-level groups. The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • Outline the challenges supervisors face in the healthcare setting
  • Discuss the strategies supervisors can use to maximise teaching opportunities
  • Evaluate personal attitudes, beliefs and behaviour and its influence on supervisory practice
  • Assess workplace culture issues that can affect education experiences

The workshop covers goal setting, gathering evidence about trainees using the PREP tools in order to give the trainee feedback on their performance. The challenges for supervisors to integrate work-based learning and assessment into the workflow are addressed along with practical strategies that can be used to help this become part of practice. The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • Discuss the purpose and importance of work-based learning and assessment
  • Analyse the cycle of planning for learning and assessment
  • Identify the challenges and solutions associated with work-based assessment in a complex environment
  • Draw on evidence of learning and achievement to determine overall performance and progression
