Hans Jeekel, Rotterdam, Hendrik Thorlacius, Malmo, Attila Szijarto, Budapest

This session intends to guide young surgeons who pursue an academic
career to achieve their goal as surgical researcher. The challenges are
how to combine high-impact research, especially basic science research,
with patient care and teaching. The ESSR has continuoulsy provided a
platform for surgeons involved in clinical and basic science research,
to interact with colleagues, fellow researchers and peers alike.
Four past-presidents of the ESSR who started their academic career in
the ESSR, will share their views with the audience on the opportunities
and threats of academic surgery as they have experienced in their
professional life. Representing various generations, they will act
as your ‘mentor’ in this session.
