With Canada on the cusp of legalized cannabis, public sector agencies and municipal governments are scrambling to prepare for the impacts, both positive and negative. In the U.S., legalization has taken a state-by-state approach, but Canada’s sweeping, national regulatory change means every community across the country will undergo legalization at the same time, with differing bylaws, law enforcement policies, distribution infrastructures and public health networks. The good news is Canada can look to other jurisdictions further along the legalization path for guidance. On the flip side, Canada—as the first G7 country to legalize cannabis—will be a bellwether for other countries considering legalization, and a lab for epidemiologists, crime specialists and policy makers around the world, who will learn from the rich data Canada produces on the impacts of legalization on the economy, healthcare and society as a whole.

The Globe and Mail will snap the conversations into focus with its Cannabis Decoded event series, bringing in top experts and analysts from the U.S., Canada and other jurisdictions to unpack the issues and provide needed clarity. The series will cover top priority issues and considerations across a range of segments including business, public health and safety, finance and investing, education and parenting, workplaces and municipalities.
