Andrew is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and holds a BSc in Business Economics and Marketing from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Throughout her 10 years’ experience, Catherine has project managed several renewable and traditional energy projects from origination, planning, permitting and into construction. Having previously worked for four years in the Environment Agency, Catherine is able to provide advice and guidance on potential constraints, risk and opportunities including required consents, permits, programme and efficiencies. Catherine also provides external Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) training to various consenting bodies such as Marine Scotland, Environment Agency, local authorities and also energy developers. Her most recent projects were a 49MW pumped storage scheme in North Wales, located in a disused slate quarry just outside Snowdonia National Park; the Development Consent Order for the 245MW Power Generation Enhancement for Tata Steel; and management of several wind farms in Scotland.
 
Gunvor Axelsson

Swedish Hydropower Association
Born in Sweden in 1952, Gunvor was brought up by the river Klaran, downstream of one of the oldest Swedish hydropower plants. She is a Master of Law (LLM), Master of European Intellectual Property Law, and a Master of Envioronmental Law, all gained at Stockjolm University, where she specialised in Water Law. She is also a Master of Societal Risk Management, gained at Karlstad University. Gunvor has been editor and lawyer at the former Swedish Employers Confederation, now the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, for close to 20 years, and the Chairman of the Swedish Hydropower Association (SVAF) since April 2013.

Andy is a Mechanical Engineer with 33 years' experience in the power industry. Until January this year, when he took early retirement, he was head of the UK Hydropower business for RWE and Director of Innogy UK and Npower Renewables Limited. He has since had a brief spell working on tidal lagoons and is now about to embark on a more local challenge in North Wales. He has his own company providing executive and specialist support for those involved in the power sector, especially renewables. Andy is a director and Chairman of the BHA, Chair of CBI in North Wales, a member of CBI council for Wales, a member of Energy Island Board representing renewable energy technologies, and a member of the Grwp Llandrillo Menai Corporation Board.
 
Chris Brett

Chris is a Director of the BHA, present Vice-Chairman, and the owner of Hydro Survey Limited. Inspired by a visit to Dinorwig pump storage station as a boy Chris has had a keen interest in hydropower ever since. He trained in engineering in Cheshire, where he was project engineer on flow and temperature regulating valves for thermal power plants. He moved to Gilkes in 1990 and joined the hydro industry in 1994. Chris has worked alongside designers of run-of-river and storage hydro in the UK and overseas. Hydro Survey Limited is an independent hydropower consultancy and is on a mission to make hydropower make sense for developers of all types. Offering a wide range of services to owners, developers and other consultancies Hydro Survey Limited is happy to help.

James has worked for a number of years as a Regional Development Officer delivering the Scottish Governments Community and Renewable Energy Scheme covering the Tayside & Central Scotland area, and recently the Argyll & Islands area. He has experience in supporting a significant number of community hydro projects from ‘boots on the burn’ to financial close, offering close support through assistance with project management and financial management of community developers grant and loan fund offered by CARE. James has an academic background in hydrology, geology and environmental engineering having successfully obtained a 1st Class Honours degree in Natural Resources Management from the University of Abertay, Dundee.

James is a Hydro Sales Engineer at Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon and a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering. After graduating from Leeds University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2005, James decided to further his education by completing a Masters of Science Degree at the University of Lancaster in 2007. The Masters was also in Mechanical Engineering but focused on renewable energy which helped pave the way for a career in Hydropower. James has now been at Gilkes for almost 5 years working mostly on International projects with his region of responsibility now being North America.
 
Claire Chapman

Claire Chapman works within the Energy Team at Scottish Water and is responsible for liaising with Ofgem on new and existing renewable sites. Previously, she worked in the oil industry in South Africa and has been in the water industry in Scotland since 2001. Her background is in environmental compliance and following an opportunity to visit international operating hydro sites with the Winston Churchill Foundation in 2011, she became fully committed to hydro. Her current target is to support Scottish Water in achieving an additional 25 GWh/annum of generation primarily through small scale hydro and ensuring that all these new hydro projects receive successful Ofgem accreditation.
 
Stephen Cirell

Stephen has worked in the Public Sector for almost 30 years, both via in house service and from the private sector. Formerly an in-house lawyer, and then a Partner with Eversheds, Stephen is one of the most well known experts on local government law and is nationally known for his writing on many different areas, being the author of over 15 books on Local Government Law, spanning over two decades. Stephen created a new business in Autumn 2010 following a highly successful year in Cornwall Council as the lead director on climate change. He now specialises in the creation of a low carbon economy, through emissions reduction schemes and renewable or clean energy projects. His main aim is to raise the ambition of local authorities, to increase their confidence and to inspire them.
 
Hamish Elliott

Hamish was Director of Development at Newcastle College Group, the UK's largest college, where he led the development of integrated employment and skills solutions. He was also Managing Director of Hull College's commercial division responsible for an annual budget of £20m of Employer led funding.  Following that Hamish set up Employer First, a not for profit company, and successfully bid for a £5m grant from the UK commission for Employment and Skills to undertake a project supporting employers in the Low Carbon sector to address their skills needs. Hamish lives in Nottingham and has three young children.

 

 
Fergus Ewing SMP

Mr Ewing was born in Glasgow in September 1957. He was educated at Edinburgh's Loretto School and then attended Glasgow University. He is the MSP for Inverness East, Nairn & Lochaber. Prior to being elected, he ran his own law practice and developed SNP policy on small business and other matters as well as serving on the party's national executive. He has served on a number of Scottish Parliament committees including the Subordinate Legislation Committee, Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, Finance, Local Government and Transport committee and was previously Shadow Minister for Transport, Tourism & Telecommunications. He was Community Safety Minister during the 2007-11 administration. He is the son of Winnie, formerly the MSP for Highlands and Islands and MEP for Scotland, and brother of Annabelle, formerly MP for Perth. A former member of the Lomond Mountain Rescue Team, Mr Ewing has climbed around two thirds of Scotland's Munroes. He was also a keen runner and has taken part in several marathons, including New York.

David Fleetwood has worked both with active industry and the history of energy in Scotland for Historic Scotland and now as part of Scottish Government’s Historic Environment Policy Unit for over six years. During this time he has led a nationwide study of hydro power in Scotland and was the author of Historic Scotland’s Power to the People publication. He also led the development of a pioneering partnership management approach to a number of high profile hydro sites in Scotland in partnership with operators. Internationally he has chaired sessions on cultural heritage at international conferences on the hydro industry and has worked extensively with colleagues in Norway to investigate and promote the international history of hydro. He is also currently involved in the development of legislation on the historic environment and the formation of Scotland’s first ever Historic Environment Strategy.
 
Kate Gilmartin

Kate has a background in renewable energy and low carbon consultancy. She provides technical consultancy, delivering renewable energy feasibilities across the country, both site specific and broader area scoping studies, working with clients and communities to address and overcome the practical barriers to installation. She has also provided due diligence for potential renewable energy investment assets, undertaking project analysis and financial modelling. Kate has a particular interest in hydro and is the administrator for the Micro Hydro Association, providing support to individuals and developers progressing micro hydro projects. This role involves liaising with the EA and lobbying DECC and Defra to highlight the increasing challenges faced by the industry through regulatory burden, raised abstraction charges and degression. Kate set up the Community Hydro Forum two years ago, which has been awarded funding through the Peer mentorship project to support communities through the complexities of hydro development.
 
Dave Griffiths

Dave Griffiths joined KGAL in 2006 with over 30 years' experience in a design and construction environment, most of which had been related to water gate control design, manufacture and installation. Having started his career with Newton Chambers Engineering - the UK's leading water control gate supplier at  that time - Dave built a thorough understanding of gate design for an international client base. Major projects included Pergau, Uri and Victoria Dam, along with supervision of gate installation and commissioning at Dinorwic Pumped Storage Scheme. He is currently KGAL Project Director on the 1285MW Xayaburi HEP in Laos.
 
Simon Hamlyn

Simon, who is a 3-Dimensional Designer by qualification, comes from a family of architects - both parents and his Grandfather. Simon's career has embraced international branded drinks, hotels & leisure, electronic entertainment, magazine publishing, internet businesses and, over the past 12 years, consumer membership organisations. Simon is based in Bangor on Dee, just south of Chester, with two terriers and two young children. He enjoys, when time permits, a love of music, cricket, football, skiing, walking, running and game shooting.

Kieron is the founder and Director of Hydroplan UK, which specialises in the consenting, design and construction of small to medium sized hydro projects.   Kieron is a hydraulic/mechanical engineer and the early part of his career was spent as a turbine designer.  He is a former chairman and CEO of the BHA.

David Harries heads the Renewable Energy practice at Aaron & Partners LLP Solicitors. Under his leadership, the team acts for developers, land owners, consultants, suppliers and manufacturers, advising on all aspects of renewable energy and all sizes of scheme. In the course of doing so Aaron & Partners LLP has gained a knowledge of the issues of renewable energy generation which is detailed, but rounded and highly practical. At the present time Aaron & Partners LLP is advising a number of hydro developers regarding approximately a dozen schemes, with installed capacities up to 0.5MW. In particular, the firm aims to give sound, clear, practical advice, on time and on budget.

Sean has worked at Ofgem's Millbank office since 2012. His current role is senior Manager within the ROO-FiT team, which administers applications for preliminary and full accreditation. Sean has recently overseen an extension of the ROO-FiT team, which operates out of Ofgem's Glasgow office.
 
Kenny Hunter

A graduate of Strathclyde University, Kenny Hunter is Business Development Manager at MEG Renewables, a subsidiary of M & Co, one of Scotland’s largest and longest established retail businesses. Kenny is responsible for identifying and progressing new opportunities, predominantly in the area of small-scale hydro, and for the project management of schemes in construction. He joined MEG Renewables from Scottish Power in 2011, initially focusing on opportunities in small-scale wind, before shifting attention in 2012 to hydro. MEG Renewables currently have two schemes in construction and a further two scheduled for build in 2015/16.

Calum is a Partner with CKD Galbraith, a multi-disciplinary firm of Chartered Surveyors operating from 13 offices across Scotland. Calum heads up the firm's Energy division, which is responsible for handling a diverse range of work, from major electricity infrastructure projects to renewable development of all scales. In a professional context, Calum is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and has held various non-executive positions within this institution, including sitting on their International Governing Council, and he presently sits on Scottish Renewables' 'Heat' Working Group. In his leisure time he pursues interests in fishing, shooting, canoeing, archery and photography.
 
Charles Jardine

Charles was born in Canterbury Kent and started fishing at the age of three before attending Bethany School and then art colleges in Canterbury and Medway. He started journalism on local newspapers within the Kent Messenger Group at the age of nineteen and moved to be an angling columnist for the Daily Telegraph plus he produced contributions for Trout Fisherman, Game Fisher and Trout and Salmon. Charles then embarked on a new career in angling politics: becoming the Angling Director for the Countryside Alliance [CA], creating the ground breaking "Water Matters" pack dedicated to taking fishing into the classroom for school children aged between 11 and 14. Charles maintains his association with the CA and now the Countryside Alliance Foundation, its charitable educational arm, as Angling Advisor, taking Fishing into schools as part of the ASDAN scheme, whilst also keeping in touch with the important politics surrounding the sport’s future.
 
Ian Jardine

Ian Jardine has a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and a Doctorate in Zoology. He began his public service career in 1984 in the Scottish Office, working successively on urban renewal, housing policy, criminal justice and industrial policy. He joined the Nature Conservancy Council for Scotland in 1991 as Regional Director and remained in that role with the formation of SNH in 1992. He was appointed Chief Executive of SNH in 2002. Ian served on the Council of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland 2005-2008; was President of Eurosite, a network for organisations managing protected areas in Europe, 2007-2010; and is a member of ENCA (European Nature Conservation Agencies). He has also worked with Europarc and IUCN/WCPA, including as a member of the World Protected Areas Leadership Forum, and is proud to be a new member of the Uganda Wildlife Society.
 
Keith Jones

Keith is an Environmental Advisor for the National Trust,  leading and advising on hydro development. He gained a 1st class Hon's at University of Wales, Bangor, in Environmental Planning. His 15 years with the National Trust have included managing landscape scale projects, direct management of  the Snowdon 4000ac farm and Countryside Manager for Snowdonia and Llyn. Keith's current role, which covers other renewables such as large PV and biomassas well as R&D partnerships, includes developing 15 hydro schemes in Wales, and he is also the technology specialist and mentor in the development of hydro schemes across the whole National Trust. The latest hydro on Hafod y Llan Snowdon won the 2014 UK Green Business Leaders Outstanding Project award. Keith is on several sustainability and energy government advisory and stakeholder panels. In his spare time he actively supports and mentors community hydro projects across the UK and he is also one of the founding directors of his local community energy company. This community hydro work also includes inputting as a steering group member to the Community Energy Wales Development Fund. He is one of the founders of the UK wide 'fit for the future' sharing network for large asset owners. In 2014 Keith was also awarded the Institute of Welsh Affairs INSPIRE Wales for his leadership in the environmental sphere.

Adrian Laycock is a civil engineer specialising in hydropower and water resources development. He has 45 years’ experience in 30 countries.  He has worked on the design and construction of numerous irrigation schemes of all sizes, with special expertise in design of canals, dams and hydraulic structures. He runs a small consulting company based in Argyll and is currently involved in the development of small-scale hydropower. Over the past 5 years the company has overseen the development of over 30 projects of 50 kW to 1 MW.

Adrian has worked in the field of renewable energy since 1980, when he was a technician at the Edinburgh University Wave Power Research Group.Has has an Honours degree in Engineering Design and Appropriate Technology from the University of Warwick. Having worked in the field of solar refrigeration and solar heating, he began working in the biogas gas industry in 1990 and the hydro industry in 2006.

Jon Needle founded Derwent Hydroelectric Power Limited following a long-term passion for waterpower. He has over 20 years' experience in the design, construction, installation and operation of small hydro schemes in the UK. He has developed and now operates nine low head sites with a combined capacity of over 1MW. In addition he has been directly involved in the refurbishment or installation of more than 40 other hydro schemes.

A Mechanical Engineer by profession, Jamie has over 25 years' experience within the sustainable development and renewable energy and technology market. Whilst working for a world-leading renewable energy consultancy and technology incubation firm, Jamie built a team of engineers to deliver pioneering projects.
 
Alison Ogley

Prior to joining the Bar, Alison practised as a solicitor advocate, specialising in planning and environment law. Alison advises on all areas of Planning and Environment Law, and has particular expertise in cases involving protected species, protected habitats and biodiversity offsetting. She advises on a wide range of environmental regulatory matters, including policy and permitting requirements, Environment Agency prosecutions relating to waste and pollution incidents, and protected species licensing matters. Alison has experience of advising on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, and has successfully petitioned Parliament, appearing before the Chairman of the Ways and Means and the Chairman of Committees and going onto appear before Parliamentary Joint Committee.
 
Judith Patten MBE

Judith Patten co-created All-Energy at the start of the century. This annual show which has moved from Aberdeen to Glasgow for the 2015 edition has now grown to be the largest renewables show in the UK; and has spawned shows in Australia and Canada. Judith is its Project Director. She also newsgathers for and edits the fortnightly News@all-Energy. Taking off her All-Energy hat, she also runs a PR consultancy with the majority of her clients involved in the marine, renewables and oceanological worlds. She was awarded MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2014 for “services to renewable energy”; and in 2012 won the Scottish Green Energy Award for “outstanding contribution”.

Simon Pattullo has worked in SEPA since 2000, beginning in the environmental planning unit in Aberdeen, then moving to East Kilbride and Stirling to be involved in pollution control before taking on his current role as water resources specialist, based in Glasgow. Since 2008 he has been involved primarily with the regulation of hydropower, a position he very much appreciates and enjoys. He is currently part of a small team focussed on improving the consistency and appropriateness of determining hydropower licence applications.

John works for Statkraft’s trading and origination team negotiating ROC and CfD PPAs for all renewable technologies. Statkraft provides PPAs to a large portfolio of projects located across the UK. Statkraft also develops and operates hydropower, onshore wind, offshore wind and other renewables assets globally. Before Statkraft, John spent seven years working for the Co-operative Bank’s Renewable Energy team providing project finance for small and medium scale renewables projects. He helped the team successfully fund over 90 onshore wind and hydro schemes. John is a business graduate from Manchester University.

Peter Roberts graduated in Civil Engineering from Imperial College in 1966. After service in the Royal Corps of Naval Construction, he joined Brown & Root in the early development of North Sea Oil & Gas facilities. As a Director of JP Kenny, Peter subsequently moved to Houston to specialise in ultra-deepwater marine pipelines. Following a few years running an offshore Commercial Bank, Peter returned to the UK to establish INTEC Engineering (UK) Ltd, from which he led a management buyout of its subsea connector unit and established VerdErg Renewable Energy Ltd in 2005. Peter is married with five children.
 
Iain Robertson

Iain joined SmartestEnergy in 2008, and has been Generation Sales Manager since 2012. He is responsible for leading the Generation Sales team of Business Development Managers, dealing with power purchase customers and stakeholders, and also manages the Glasgow office. Having joined the Scottish Renewables Board of Directors in 2014, Iain has extensive previous experience in the Scottish energy market, having spent six years with ScottishPower in functions including Energy Trading, Technical Services and Metering Services. He has a BEng (Hons) in Environmental Engineering and a Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Systems & the Environment from the University of Strathclyde.

Graham is the Managing Director of Setters, an organisation which specialises in coaching and culture development to achieve and sustain zero harm in high risk organisations. Setters support their clients through their strategic +people(plus people)programme by providing 24/07 hands on management and systems support through their team of qualified safety coaches. Prior to establishing Setters over the past 22 years, Graham held senior management positions predominantly in the steel industry and oil and gas, in the latter case as an Offshore Installation Manager in the North Sea and Irish Sea.
 
Stuart Stephens

After graduating in Politics from Nottingham University, Stuart spent several years with Unilever before working in commercial roles for other consumer goods businesses. For the last five years Stuart has been Commercial Director at NFPA leading the team as the business grows its e-POWER and e-ROC on-line auction platforms for the selling of generators’ renewable power and ROCs. Outside of work Stuart is married, living in Yorkshire and spending most of his spare time with his wife and two children - but also finding the odd hour or two to train for the Yorkshire marathon.
