PARKS IN PRACTICE MASTER CLASS - MONDAY 26TH OCT.

STREAM: Parks, Environment, Biodiversity and Conservation

DESCRIPTION:  A walking tour through the heart of Australia's busiest City to gain firsthand experience from tour guides on the various management practices, innovations, and aspects encountered in delivering high quality public open space and amenity in the Sydney CBD.  This is a chance to learn firsthand from industry leading park practitioners who will share the experiences gained in implementing and managing the iconic parklands and green spaces that make the City of Sydney a vibrant and connected place for the close to 1 million people who live, work, or frequent the City on a daily basis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Appreciation of the diversity and complexity of services and impacts in busy City spaces.  Hear and experience the management practices required to achieve high quality outcomes whilst managing competing demands, and gain an appreciation for factors influencing parks and recreational planning such as user expectations, connectivity, and demand management.

TOUR 1: A sustainable sports program in the Parklands.

STREAM: Sport and Physical Activity

DESCRIPTION: A site visit to one of the world’s best Urban Parks and Australia’s largest community sporting precinct – Centennial Park. A site tour that will take in Australia’s most popular public golf facility, Moore Park Golf, visit Moore Park’s developing sporting precinct including a soon to be complete full-size synthetic field, see Centennial Park’s 35+ sporting fields including the training fields hosting the Sydney Swans, NSW Waratahs and Sydney Roosters and the Centennial Park Equestrian Centre, a facility accommodating in excess of 200 horses in the centre of Sydney.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Hear from the Centennial Park staff on their success in delivering a range of sport programs, facilities and services whilst ensuring commercial viability, ongoing maintenance needs and the parks sustainability. Hosting in excess of 20 million visitors a year with an operating budget funded entirely from revenue streams developed across the site the Parklands continues to balance the needs of the community sporting population and the park’s ongoing sustainability.

TOUR 2: World Class Aquatic Facilities - Prince Alfred Park and Pool and Green Square Aquatic Centre

STREAM: Sport and Physical Activity

DESCRIPTION: This tour will discuss the redesign of Prince Alfred Park and the reinterpretation of this 19th century parkland to contemporise the park without erasing its Victorian roots.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: To understand the principles and systems of order that informed the park and pool design.  Participants will explore the project components and understand how they evolved.  Participants will also gain an understanding of how the various team members involved worked collaboratively in the delivery of the public park facility.

TOUR 3: Community Gardens - best practices for a successful garden

STREAM: Community, Recreation and Urban Planning

DESCRIPTION: The tour will provide background on the development of the various community gardens, design, type and methodology, membership structure and responsibilities, funding, and the challenges and solutions. Visiting three diverse community gardens across the city.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Development and the importance of self - managed community gardening groups Understanding of community engagement and achieving positive social outcomes. Encourage sustainable practices in garden design.

TOUR 4: Pyrmont Redevelopment Walking Tour combined with The Goods Line and ICC Precinct (International Convention Centre)

STREAM: Community, Recreation and Urban Planning

DESCRIPTION: Tour will provide great insight into the process that was undertaken to redevelop Pyrmont and the many compromises made with the developers to provide something close to the original proposed design aspect for the area. The redevelopment of the Goods Line to a shared pathway connecting Sydney CBD - stage 1 completed and near the site of the Convention Centre precinct.

TOUR 5: Sydney Park - Water Reuse and City Farm Projects

STREAM: Parks, Environment, Biodiversity and Conservation

DESCRIPTION: This presentation will paint a historical context of the development of Sydney Park and stormwater harvesting in Sydney over the last decade, provide retrospective appraisal of the strengths and challenges of the Sydney Park scheme and discuss the future of Sydney's de-centralised water reuse vision. City Farm - the presentation will discuss the journey from vision, through the process in building social capital to the early development stages.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: City Farm - Developed awareness of social capital, appreciation for educational and marketing aspects related to public programs and project delivery, appreciation of the importance of community consultation in providing needs based outcomes. The stormwater harvesting tour will provide retrospective appraisal of the strengthen and challenges of the Sydney Park scheme and discuss the future of Sydney's de-centralised water reuse vision.

TOUR 6: Managing Heritage Trees in a World City

STREAM: Parks, Environment, Biodiversity and Conservation

DESCRIPTION: The tour will highlight Hyde Park’s history and how it influences the management of the trees in a culturally significant and high use landscape. The central avenue of Hills Figs will be a key focus, with discussion on the various pathogens impacting the trees health and structure, and how the park is managed to balance the benefits provided by the trees to any potential risk posed. The tour will also visit other iconic 19th century parks in the City.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The development and implementation of the best practice Tree Management Plans which have been developed to manage and protect the heritage trees.

TOUR 7: Barangaroo Development

STREAM: Tourism, Arts and Interpretation

DESCRIPTION:

A guided tour of Barangaroo Point Reserve, Sydney’s newest harbour headland and foreshore park, one of the only examples of monumental landscape architecture worldwide.

This tour provides an overview and insight in to the ICC Sydney development and core facilities that will be complete in December 2016, the surrounding hotel and residential developments, urban regeneration and The Goods Line connectivity corridor that combined will change the face and use of the Darling Harbour precinct as a globally recognised destination to live, work, play and do business.

TOUR 8: City of Sydney Open Museum and Public Art Collection

DESCRIPTION: Art in public places is one of the indicators of a flourishing cultural life. It can add joy, texture and complexity to the public domain, help to define our places, tell our stories, and preserve our memories for future generations. The City’s parks are home to a remarkable collection of monuments, sculptures, fountains and memorials. This technical tour through a number of city parks will reveal some of these works and provide an insight into the process of commissioning, maintaining, managing and displaying them.

DESCRIPTION: This Unique Amazing Race is an exciting 2.5-3hr interactive game through the beautiful Sydney CBD and Harbour Foreshore. Using the "Amazing Race" as a base concept we rev up the competition and condense it all into a crazy fun challenge that your entire delegation will be talking about for years.
