  Dr Stuart Galloway

Reader,  Health and Exercise Sciences Research Group the
University of Stirling

   Chair of SENr

Stuart Galloway is a Reader in the Health and Exercise Sciences Research Group at the University of Stirling. His research focusses on human nutrition and exercise metabolism, with a special interest in factors affecting carbohydrate and fat metabolism. His current research projects are exploring carbohydrate feeding and metabolism in endurance exercise, understanding the role of carnitine in substrate metabolism, investigating the impact of fish oil feeding on skeletal muscle metabolism and function, and examining the influence of high-intensity training on adaptation of human skeletal muscle for health / performance gains. His research uses a range of techniques to assess whole body metabolic alterations and more recently includes a focus on tissue and cell work

Stuart will present Fish Oil supplementation: applications in health as part of the Fish Oil Supplements from University of Stirling.

Overview of Presentation: Examining the evidence for omega-3 oils in health and applications in maintenance of muscle mass. Data will be presented from human studies examining changes in muscle omega-3 content with supplementation and will then focus in on a recent study from our lab investigating omega-3 and metabolic health outcomes. The final section of the talk will review omega-3 and immune function and present some recent data on immune function markers when supplementing with fish oils.

  David Lee Hamilton

Lecturer (Health and Exercise Sciences), University of Stirling

David achieved a BSc (1st) Sports Biomedicine. PhD in Molecular exercise physiology and is now a lecturer at the University of Stirling with research focused on understanding the molecular basis of skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise and nutrition.

David will present Are all Omega 3’s created equal? Insights from cellular and animal studies as part of the Fish Oil Supplements from University of Stirling.

Overview of Presentation: Omega3 fatty acid supplementation has been shown to have robust effects on skeletal muscle mass and function. However, some cell and animal based studies suggest that some omega3’s may be more beneficial for certain outcomes than others. This presentation will touch on some of these studies and highlight the importance of certain omega3 fatty acids.
