Bias and Bullying: One-day conference
 
Brian Berman, MD

Brian Berman, M.D., joined Beaumont Health System in August 2012 as Chairman, Department of Pediatrics and as pediatrician-in-chief, Beaumont Children's Hospital. He came to Beaumont from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. Dr. Berman received his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia. He did his residency in pediatrics at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Temple University. He also did a two-year fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at the Yale University School of Medicine. A committed and active clinician and educator, Dr. Berman joined the faculty of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine as the school's Chairman of Pediatrics. While in Cleveland, he served as Professor and Vice Chairman for Faculty Affairs, Department of Pediatrics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Berman has organized and participated in more than 200 conferences, lectures, presentations and other medical educational activities. He was honored nine times with the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and was a six-time winner of the "Pearl's Day" award for teaching excellence, presented by Rainbow pediatric residents. He has also authored or co-authored more than 50 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, including prestigious publications such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Pediatrics, Blood and the Journal of the American Medical Association. He currently serves on the editorial board of Clinical Pediatrics. Dr. Berman founded and directed the Sickle Cell Anemia Center at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. His background in clinical research includes work on many National Institutes of Health funded trials focusing on his interest in disorders of blood. In more than 30 years at Rainbow, Dr. Berman most recently served as Chief of the Division of General Academic Pediatrics and director of the Pediatric Consultation and Referral Service. He also held many other medical leadership roles, including Vice Chairman for Community Physician Affairs; acting chief, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology; interim Chief, Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology; acting Chief, Genetic Center and interim Co-Chairman, Department of Pediatrics.
 
Elizabeth Englander, Ph.D.

Director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center
Elizabeth Englander is a professor of Psychology and the founder and Director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University, a Center that delivers anti-violence programs, resources, and research. She is a nationally recognized researcher and expert in the area of bullying and cyberbullying, childhood causes of violence, aggression and abuse, and child development. She has a particular expertise in technological aggression and how it interacts with aggression in general.
 
Mahogany Jones
Teaching Artist
InsideOut Literary Arts Project (InsideOut)
Recording Artist, Arts Educator, US Musical Ambassador, Kresge Arts Fellow, and founder of a PUREmovment, Mahogany Jones is a lyrical force. As noted by the Detroit Metro Times, her latest release "SugarWater" is " not only excellent ear candy, but an important discussion about contemporary issues." She works as a teaching artist with Detroit non profit arts organization- InsideOut Literary Arts Project (InsideOut). Through a special partnership with Beaumont's Children's Hospital NoBLE (No bullying live empowered) and InsideOut she offered an anti-bullying themed writing workshop series that focused on exploring self, family, and peer relationships, in conjunction with growing writing skills and reading engagement. The program is funded through the Oak Park School District and the PNC Foundation.

Jody Manning has been with PACER Center since 2003 and currently serves as the Parent Training and Information Center Director. Jody studied nursing at Andrews University and then worked in the nursing field for a number of years. She later studied psychology at Metropolitan State University. In 1987, Jody gave birth to a wonderful son who was later diagnosed with disabilities. Through that personal experience, she has an understanding of the challenges a parent encounters when a child is struggling. Jody finds her background in nursing, psychology, management, and social services to be an ideal combination that can assist families of children with disabilities and those with children experiencing bullying as they navigate through school and community life. Jody coordinates a number of projects within PACER Center, which all focus on creating positive outcomes for students. She connects individually with parents of children with disabilities to help them understand how to advocate on behalf of their children.
 
Meghan McCoy, Ed.D.

Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center
Meghan K. McCoy, Ed.D. is the Program Coordinator at MARC, the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center, at Bridgewater State University and is a Part time Instructor of Psychology. She received her BA from Long Island University, her M.Ed. from BSU, and her Ed.D. from Northeastern University. In her work at MARC, she trains students, faculty, administration, and parents about issues related to bullying and cyberbullying prevention, recognition, and intervention.

In 1996, he started America & MOORE, LLC to provide more comprehensive diversity, privilege and leadership trainings/workshops. Through America & Moore he shares interactive and motivating presentations to students from grade K through post-secondary levels, to parents, community members and organizations, city and state government employees throughout the nation. Eddie is an engaging, dynamic, challenging and approachable leader, consultant and public speaker. Dr. Moore has presented at national and international conferences focusing on a variety of issues related to diversity, youth, community, education, cultural competency, leadership, white privilege and oppression.

She is a highly accomplished consultant and facilitator who is motivating, energetic, knowledgeable and engaging. She excels in areas of leadership development, organization assessment and the development of comprehensive approaches to working with diversity, inclusion, bias and creating cross cultural dexterity. She works with leaders and employees from the C Suite to the shop floor, within organizations both national and international. Loretta has over 18 years of Diversity and Inclusion experience that incorporates consulting, organizational development, program evaluation and design, education and training.

Metro Detroiter, Kevin Young Jr., at 14 years old is already carving out his own path to being a prolific wordsmith. When asked when he first discovered he loved the page and that stage, he responded, "Last year my 8th grade English teacher (Mrs. Lisa Kraiza), bought her friend in, Ms. Mo, from a program InsideOut, and it was then I began writing." He hasn't stopped since. He's currently a Freshman attending the Oak Park Freshman Institute, and looking forward to continuing to grow in his craft and share his brilliance with the world.
