Conference: Balbinot highlights regulatory pressures |
12 June 2014
In his speech today to open Insurance Europe’s 6th International Conference, federation president Sergio Balbinot outlined the regulatory challenges faced by the industry.
Citing more than 130 initiatives affecting insurers that came out of the last five-year mandate of the European Commission, Balbinot said: “It is clear that such a large number of initiatives can also create undesirable effects, such as unintended consequences, additional costs and administrative burden, not to mention overlaps and contradictions among national, regional and international regulatory requirements.”
Regulatory overlaps have to be avoided, Balbinot said, because they create legal uncertainty, compliance concerns and reputational issues.

11 June 2014
At the unanimous request of members, Sergio Balbinot, deputy group CEO of Generali Group, Italy, has accepted to extend his mandate as president of Insurance Europe for a further year.
“I appreciate the trust the industry has shown in me by extending my mandate as president of Insurance Europe. The insurance sector faces challenges from all sides and so requires strong advocacy in order to ensure both its fair treatment and that its place as a major economic contributor is fully recognised,” said Balbinot.
The renewal of his mandate comes at a crucial time for a European insurance industry facing myriad challenges, such as slow economic growth and increased regulation, which are outlined in Insurance Europe’s annual report, released today.
