Subject: 499–Bone Grafting/GTR Surgery
Credits: 3 (Lecture)
Saturday, July 16: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Audience: D, H, ST, R
Fee: $60
Location: Level 3, Room 302

Speaker Bio: Dedham, MA; assistant clinical professor, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine

Description: Clinical cases involving successful outcomes utilizing regenerative periodontal therapy will be contrasted with cases deemed to have a poor prognosis and treated with extraction, ridge preservation/augmentation, and implant therapy. Techniques for periodontal regeneration, as well as procedures for ridge preservation/augmentation, will be presented during this lecture course. The rationale for choosing tooth retention versus extraction will be discussed for the cases presented. Regenerative materials utilized in tooth retention or socket preservation/ridge augmentation will be reviewed.

Learning objectives:
  • Review clinical and radiographic findings for predictable regenerative outcomes.
  • Review the limitations of nonsurgical treatment and the rationale for access flap procedures.
  • Be able to develop a periodontal prognosis with and without access flap therapy.
  • Learn about the biologic principles and flap design associated with surgical periodontal regeneration therapy.
  • Understand the value of materials and tools associated with regeneration; i.e., bone grafts, barrier membranes, growth factors, and lasers.
  • Learn about techniques and materials utilized in ridge preservation/augmentation.
This course is a prerequisite for P24: A Primer for Basic Periodontal Surgery
