Description: This participation course will review the indications, contraindications, techniques, and postoperative management for functional and esthetic crown lengthening surgery. The hands-on component of this participation course, a workshop, will utilize two plastic typodonts that incorporate simulated gingiva. One typodont includes a fractured maxillary premolar, as well as osseous deformities, which will be recontoured to simulate a functional crown lengthening procedure. A maxillary anterior plastic typodont will be utilized to simulate an esthetic crown lengthening procedure. The participant will employ the models to learn how to make incisions, provide osseous resection, and suture the flaps to expose tooth structure.

Learning objectives:
  • Learn about indications and contraindications for functional crown lengthening.
  • Learn about indications for esthetic crown lengthening.
  • Explore surgical flap design for an apically positioned flap margin.
  • Review resective management of osseous tissues.
  • Learn about suturing techniques.
  • Review postoperative management.
