Description: Age 60 is the new 40, and 80 is the new 60! The stereotypes about aging are changing rapidly. Today’s grandmother is more likely to be wearing braces than dentures. This lecture course will discuss the unique oral health needs of an aging population and the expectations these patients have about their oral health. This course also will review changes associated with aging and diseases and the important role that prevention plays in keeping this population orally healthy. This course will use cases to illustrate the issues the dental team faces in helping patients to maintain their oral health in the face of multiple chronic diseases.

Learning objectives:
  • Be able to challenge the three most common stereotypes of older adults.
  • Be able to list the five most common chronic diseases in older adults.
  • Be able to identify conditions that can increase the risk of caries, root caries, and periodontal disease in older adults, and understand how to develop preventive protocols for these diseases.
  • Understand how to manage the patient with decreased saliva.
Colgate is the Presenting Sponsor of this course.
