Description: Looking at an average-size dental practice, there are approximately 440 patients who are at high risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is well-known that sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) has been on the rise in both men and women—and its prevalence is continuing to grow. Research shows 93 percent of women and 82 percent of men may have undiagnosed moderate SAS. In addition, 29 to 83 percent of patients who are diagnosed with OSA are intolerant of the prescribed treatment, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). The majority of these intolerant patients have no idea that oral appliance therapy is a valid treatment approach.

 Learning objectives:

  • Understand the terminology used in sleep medicine.
  • Know about sleep disordered breathing.
  • Learn about the pathophysiology of OSA.
  • Learn about the comorbidities of OSA.
  • Become introduced to oral appliance designs.
  • Understand the role of dentistry in treating OSA.
