Description: Employing proper case selection, we can and should help patients retain at least 28 of their own teeth. Patient assessment, microbiology, and risk factors for the development of periodontal disease will be reviewed during this lecture course. Clinical cases involving successful outcomes utilizing periodontal nonsurgical therapy will be presented. Instrumentation utilized in mechanical debridement, as well as antimicrobials and antibiotics, will be evaluated for their clinical effectiveness. Maintenance techniques for restored implants replacing missing teeth also will be discussed.

Learning objectives:

  • Be able to identify the basic mechanisms of the acute and chronic periodontal infection.
  • Be able to recognize the risk factors, both local and systemic, involved in periodontal diseases.
  • Be able to recognize orthodontic interactions.
  • Understand how to improve patient assessment, diagnosis, and decision-making in nonsurgical periodontal management.
  • Learn about the effectiveness and limitations of nonsurgical mechanical periodontal, as well as adjunctive antibiotic and antimicrobial, therapy.
  • Review techniques for nonsurgical implant maintenance.
