Overview

This one day workshop will provide an essential overview of the significant differences with the reformed Functional Skills in English and maths at Entry 1, 2 and 3 and help to prepare for the transition to the reformed qualifications and new delivery requirements.

Activities will allow time to reflect on any changes needed within your organisation and start to formulate a transitional plan, to support a smooth implementation in September 2019.

The workshop is aimed at practitioners delivering, or managers supporting, the implementation of the reformed Entry 1, 2 and 3 Functional Skills English and mathematics qualifications

The workshop will focus on:
  • Understanding the new requirements and additional challenge for learners with the reformed Functional Skills at Entry 1,2 and 3 English and mathematics
  • determine the differences between the legacy Entry 1, 2 and 3 English and mathematics Functional Skills and the reformed Entry 1, 2 and 3 qualifications;
  • delivery planning for areas of increased challenge for learners
  • CPPD awareness related to specific subject content for staff delivering the reforms;
  • review of resources that support the new delivery requirements
  • planning for implementation and impact on resource and programme development;
  • planning for transitional requirements of the legacy qualifications and increased quality assurance.
Target Audience

Any provider – ITP/ College/ Employer Provider/ Adult and Community/Secure Estate etc. - delivering Functional Skills English and mathematics at Entry 1, 2 and 3, either as standalone qualifications, or as part of a Traineeship or Study Programme.

Background

The development of the reformed Functional Skills English and mathematics was initiated to allow continued parity with the reformed 9-1 GCSE’s in English and mathematics. By default this has impacted on the Entry qualifications to ensure that the ‘jump’ from Entry 3 to Level 1 is not unachievable for learners. As a result additional stretch and challenge has been introduced, with some of the more significant overall adjustments at Entry, in particular the introduction of spelling tests and the expected use of phonics to support the development of the required skills for English.

It is expected that Ofsted will look favourably on organisations that develop and implement plans for the transition from the legacy Functional Skills because this will show strong leadership and management in support of the learner experience and demonstrate that learners are at the centre of programme planning and execution for these core subjects.

Please note that the content of this workshop focuses on the qualification requirements and the teaching and expectations for learner competence at final assessment and does not relate to any specific assessment methodology, this will vary and be determined by the various awarding organisations approved by Ofqual to offer the reformed Functional Skills.
