INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS

Professor Thomas is presently Director of the Biofilm Research Laboratory for Translational Studies in Medicine, Dentistry, and Industry at West Virginia University. He created the International Tri-University Biofilm Research Consortium in 2002. He has published extensively on diverse microbial topics emphasizing oral biofilms and their importance in probiotic management, and their link to systemic diseases, chronic wounds, global antibiotic resistance and recently the tumor –biofilm connection. Michael I. MacEntee, PhD, LDS(Irl), Dip. Prosth (MUSC)., FRCD(C). Professor of Prosthodontics and Dental Geriatrics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia. He has been involved for most of his academic career with the oral health needs of elders - as a prosthodontist, a teacher, and a researcher. He established the ELDERS (Elders’ Link with Dental Education, Research and Service) Group with colleagues at UBC to provide administrative structure to the service needs of our ageing population and to the educational needs of dentists and dental students within an overall context of research. His research addresses oral health and quality of life in old age, with a particular focus on frailty and the psychosocial impact of oral prostheses. He has published several books, numerous book chapters and more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals on the measurement, distribution, impact and management of oral disorders. He is a past-president of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada, and the International College of Prosthodontists. Recently, he is the senior editor of the text Oral healthcare and the frail elder. Ames, IA: Wiley-Blackwell. (December 2010). In 2009, he received the Distinguished Scientist “Geriatric Oral Research Award” from the International Association for Dental Research.



Professor Yoko KAWAGUCHI, DDS, PhD. has a special interest in oral health promotion, oral malodor and the relationship between oral health and general health. She is currently working in the Department of Oral Health Promotion, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University as executive advisor to the president and Head of the Fresh Breath Clinic. Professor Kawaguchi has been a research fellow in Australia, the USA and Denmark.
