Speakers: Jay Bowman, FMI Principal and Director of Research Practice Ryan Howsam, FMI Senior Strategy and Risk Management Consultant
The construction industry is experiencing exponential change
that is challenging the historically linear thinking of the relevance of the
traditional contractor and specifically the General Contractor, and by
extension, challenging the ability for associations to serve this membership
stratification.FMI will present the
trends and innovation taking place today that will influence the foundation of
the industry, causing significant disruption within the A/E/C industry. For the modern construction leader, VUCA—a
world characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity
and Ambiguity—is such a part of daily leadership and strategic thinking
that it almost fades into the background. We will explore how current examples
of VUCA trends in the design and construction industry coupled with the growth
of megaprojects, continued adaptation of BIM/VDS, prefabrication and
modularization, autonomous driving vehicles, 3D printing and the emergence of
mega-engineering firms, to name a few, are all driving permanent change in a
$1.2+ trillion fragmented industry. Armed with this insight into the future,
how might local AGC Chapters position themselves to be relevant in the future
for their members?
Speaker: Tom Morrison, Chief Energy Officer, Tom Morrison & Associates, Inc.
In
this new UBERIZATION economy, 3 dynamic forces are causing the association
value proposition to be questioned more than ever. Lack of member
engagement is the #1 reason members cancel membership. Tom Morrison will
unpack the 3 forces driving change in every industry, the 10 keys to maximizing
value and engagement and show attendees 4 visuals every board should be looking
at to lead disruption in their industry. The future is coming fast. You
will either lead or be left behind. You get to choose. Don’t miss this
session.
Moderator: Phil Thoden, President and CEO, Austin Chapter AGC

Over the past several years you and your staff have worked
to cultivate a successful emerging leaders group, often known as a Young Constructors
Forum (YCF) or a Construction Leadership Council (CLC), to ensure the future succession of
your chapter. But, what’s next? How do you continue to keep these individuals
engaged with the chapter once they “age out” of your young leaders program?
During this session, Chapters will discuss and explore ways to keep young
leaders engaged in the chapter and leverage their energy and talents once they
have gone through a CLC/YCF program.
This event is only open to AGC chapter executives.
Moderator: Jeff Wilson, Chief Marketing Officer, AGC of America
Panelists: Michelle Anaya DePotter, CEO, Florida East Coast Chapter Wayne Hammon, CEO, Idaho AGC Chad Kleppe, President and CEO, Master Builders of Iowa Mike Puelle, CEO, AGC New Mexico
AGC service and supply members are
a valuable source of knowledge, expertise, best practices and
sponsorship/funding for local Chapters.
Is your chapter leveraging this group of valuable members?
For some chapters, there is
“untapped value” within this group of members. While many service and supply
member firms are active in their local chapters and their chapter leadership
takes full advantage of the breadth of ideas, knowledge and insights these
members bring to the table, not all chapters are fully engaging their service and supply members.
Join members of AGC’s Service
& Supply Council and hear examples of member firms and chapters that are
working together to build relationships beyond sponsorship opportunities and
add value to their membership portfolio. We’ll highlight some “best of class”
programs of local relationships at the chapter level, and engage in a
discussion about how we can further advance the relationships with this group
of members.

While chapter executives should be able to explain to their
Board and staff how succession will be handled in the event of their departure
or the departure of key staff, many are not properly prepared. Strong
succession planning can help ensure operational excellence. According to the
American Society for Quality, 67% of organizations do not have any succession
process in place and only 24% are confident of their ability to staff
leadership positions in the next five years. Nearly 35% of AGC chapter
executives have little to no confidence in the succession plan for their
chapter following their own departure.
Hear from three AGC Chapter execs who will share their
stories and experiences about the importance of thoughtful planning, how to
execute a smooth transition of leadership, and how to set your successor and
the chapter up for success after you’re gone.

An interactive and engaging session where we will explore
leading and forward-thinking chapter practices from organizations across the
country who are using technology to automate everyday administration so that
executives, staff and volunteers can spend more time focusing on mission,
impact and members, and less time on time-sucking activities that everyone
hates.
Through practical exercises specific to your own chapter, you’ll learn how to:
measure and improve member engagement
identify leading KPI’s that influence chapter growth
leverage technology to gain insights into the minds of your members
create a chapter development plan
attract strong new talent into the organization
We’ll take a peek into some of today’s newest technologies that enable chapters to reduce operational inefficiencies, save money, and gain smarter insights . . . all with the outcome of having more impact in the lives and communities you seek to serve.
Speaker: Brent Darnell, Brent Darnell International
In the construction industry, innovation is critical. We can all agree on that. The question
becomes how can we spark, foster, and implement innovative solutions?Research shows that teams that include more
diverse individuals tend to excel beyond teams made up of those that are like-minded.By creating Boards and teams that consist of people
from different backgrounds, different experiences, different levels, different
cultures and countries, different genders or ethnicities, we can better achieve
that goal.
Aside from
financial returns organizations can earn when they have all positions filled
with qualified personnel, diversity can impact the overall performance by
making collective judgments. Organizations seek to embrace differences and
create environments which promote diversity and inclusion, but they don’t always
know how to go about it.
In this program, you will learn the definitions of
diversity and inclusion, the practical business case for diversity and
inclusion, how to identify your own biases both conscious and unconscious and
practical steps for you and your chapter to take to incorporate more diversity
and inclusion in your leadership, your programs and your membership. The
discussion will take you beyond EEO compliance and the avoidance of lawsuits.
It gets at the heart of the matter and endeavors to create true behavioral
shifts to create a more diverse and inclusive industry.
AGC
of America has been working with Naylor to conduct extensive research to
predict how the construction industry will continue to evolve over the next
five, ten and twenty years. As part of that effort, we conducted a Future
Focus Survey of AGC member firms, organized several focus group meetings during
the Annual Convention, contacted industry analysts and experts and held
one-on-one meetings with key association staff. The research is being
conducted as part of AGC of America’s broader centennial celebration and will
be used to inform a number of recommendations for how AGC of America should
evolve to best meet the needs of a changing industry.

The appeal
of working in high-paying construction careers in Texas has taken a hit the
past few years as a group known as the Workers Defense Project has been busy
misrepresenting the industry’s safety record in the state. AGC of America
partnered with the various chapters in Texas to create a new campaign called
Texas Builds designed to highlight the industry’s commitment to safety, good
pay and advancement. Working together, we created a series of videos that
relied on workers to talk about the opportunities in the industry and the
sector’s commitment to safety. We then built a special website and
organized a targeted digital advertising and social media campaign to get the
new website in front of as many key audiences as possible. Learn how
chapters and AGC of America can combine resources and skills to create
comparable campaigns in your area.
