From the Outside Looking In

Jacque J. Sokolov, MD, Chairman and Managing Partner, SSB Partners/Consultants

Over the past 15 years, he has led consulting engagements with top-tier physician organizations, hospital systems, and managed care organizations in virtually every major market in the country.  By understanding the different business and clinical perspectives of large employers, health plans, hospitals, physicians, and other stakeholders, SSB has unique insight into the forces and dynamics that shape health care in America today. Dr. Sokolov will draw from this broad exposure to present a balanced and far-reaching vision for where health care is headed, opportunities and pitfalls that could appear along the way, and how the likely changes will affect AMGA’s members.

The Sideline Approach

With Accountable Care Organizations, one size doesn’t necessarily fit all; there are several factors to consider such as your patient population, payer mix, and marketplace. Not to mention your IT infrastructure, leadership & governance, culture, the list goes on.

Further, we know that true delivery system reform is not dependent on any single piece of legislation, but rather the continued efforts of patient-centered organizations that are making healthcare advancements day-in and day-out.
In this discussion, hear how a group has embraced a strategic “wait and see” approach towards becoming an ACO, with seemingly minimal pressure from their particular payers and marketplace, and has continued to thrive under its own high performing delivery model.
12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Council Networking Lunch with CAO/COO, CEO/COB/Pres. & Quality Director Leadership Councils

Choose Wisely

John Santa, M.D., M.P.H., Director of the Health Ratings Center, Consumer Reports

When should patients say “Whoa!” to their doctors? Consumer Reports has some answers in a new follow-up report to the Choosing Wisely campaign launched in April by the ABIM Foundation. The coalition of nine physician groups compiled lists of “Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question” to represent each doctor group.
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. ACOs From Theory to Practice (2 of 2)
The Deep Dive

For some, achieving the status of an ACO and functioning as an “Accountable Care Organization,” is like converting your high end sports car into a drag racer. Your foundation is strong, having benefited from years of refining, few “repairs” are needed, and with a somewhat significant financial investment towards infrastructure and integration, you’ll be able to function more efficiently, yield higher results in quality outcomes, and reap higher financial benefit through your “sponsors” or payers.

Hear how this particular group’s strategic approach was to embark on multiple Accountable Care initiatives, fully embracing the new direction. Consider why it made sense for them, when other groups have chosen a different path, and uncover different approaches that may align with your situation which you can take back and share in your groups strategic planning.
2:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Compensation Trends and Strategies

It may not be your favorite subject, but to be successful as a Chief Medical Officer or Medical Director in this new age of healthcare, you must be proficient in various physician compensation models formulas and strategies. Through conversation, collaboration, and by examining other medical groups and health systems from around the country, you will come away from this session with several best practices and approaches to utilize in your groups tactical planning.
