Laura Dawson, the Director of the Wilson Center’s Canada Institute, is one of the world’s leading experts on political and economic relations between the U.S. and its northern neighbor. Named among the top 100 foreign policy influencers in Canada, she is an in-demand writer, analyst and adviser on NAFTA, TPP and international trade. The founder of Dawson Strategic, an economic research and consulting firm, Dawson is a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute and was senior adviser on economic affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa.

As Vice-President, Corporate Compliance & Internal Audit Rob provides strategic and functional leadership to the Corporate Compliance and Internal Audit teams at TransCanada. In addition to overseeing the Internal Audit function at TransCanada, Rob’s Corporate Compliance responsibilities include: TransCanada’s code of business ethics, corporate policies, inter-affiliate codes of conduct, third-party due diligence and legal requirements monitoring. Rob is also the Head of Enterprise Risk Management.

Prior to his current role, Rob held the position of Vice-President, Human Resources and prior to that, the position of Assistant Controller as well as other senior positions in Accounting across each of TransCanada’s businesses. Prior to joining TransCanada, Rob was an audit manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In January 2014, Barry James joined Lloyd Sadd Insurance Brokers in the newly created role of Chief
Corporate Development Officer where he is responsible for developing strategic and corporate initiatives,
managing client relationships and assisting with innovative business opportunities.
Barry was previously Managing Partner of the Edmonton office of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, a
position he held for ten years. With more than 35 years' experience, Barry served as an integral business
advisor to his many Edmonton and area clients.
 
Barry received a Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) degree from the University of Alberta in 1980,
qualified as a CA in 1983 and became a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants in 2007. He joined PwC in
1977 and was admitted to the partnership in 1989. He was the Managing Partner of the Edmonton office
from July 2001 to June 2011.
 
Barry has been actively involved in his profession, serving as a trustee of the Chartered Accountants'
Education Foundation, President of the Edmonton CA Club, and as a member of the Registration
Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta.
 
In the community, Barry is currently a Minister-appointed member of the Board of ATB Financial,
serving as Chair of the Audit Committee and Chair of the Audit Committee of the Province of Alberta.
He was a member of the University of Alberta Board of Governors and the University of Alberta Senate.
He is a member of the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and the Alberta
Chapter of the World Presidents' Organization. He also sits on the Boards of Corus Entertainment,
AutoCanada Inc., The Galleria, Norseman Group and Inuvialuit Investment Corporation. Barry is on the
Advisory Boards of Surehire Inc. and Almita Piling Inc. and he is co-chair of the Mayor’s Business
Advisory Round Table. He has served as Chair of the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and on the
Board of Directors of the Edmonton Convention Centre Authority, the Forest Industry Suppliers'
Association of Alberta, the Edmonton Space and Science Foundation (TELUS World of Science) and the
Support Network Foundation.
 
Barry is a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and the Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club. He is a
former member of the Alberta Squash Racquets Association and the Edmonton Strikers Soccer Club. He
is a proud supporter and season ticket holder of the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club and the FC Edmonton
Soccer Club.
 
Barry is married to Valerie Berger and they have 3 sons aged 21, 23 and 24.
 
 
Christine Maligec

Christine Maligec has more than a decade of experience in risk management, including overseeing large corporate insurance programs and claims within multiple jurisdictions in North America. Before joining the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) a year ago, she was the risk officer for Alberta Blue Cross and worked in various risk-related roles within major corporations.

Christine is an active member of the Northern Alberta RIMS chapter and was appointed president for 2016-2019. She is also the co-chair for the 2019 RIMS Canada Conference.

 
Jane Shapiro

Jane has more than 30 years of experience in corporate, consulting and government environments. She is especially skilled at leading integrated teams on complex and sensitive client assignments in order to gain community and stakeholder acceptance and enhance, preserve or minimize damage to corporate reputation. Jane has worked with executive teams and corporate boards in both the public and private sectors, providing counsel and support in managing difficult and often urgent matters, including investigations, legal actions, restructuring, environmental incidents and engagement in political and community-sensitive environments. She has developed crisis communication plans for a diverse range of clients and delivered many simulation exercises designed to prepare organizations to manage urgent situations effectively. She is a frequent speaker on issues and crisis management and an experienced media and presentation trainer. Prior to joining H+K, Jane worked at another global agency and in public affairs with multinational corporations in the oil and gas and pharmaceutical industries and in both government and political offices. Jane has a master’s degree in political economy from the University of Toronto. She served as a mentor in the Rotman Business School’s mentorship program. She has a certificate from the Institut de Francais, Villefranche-Sur-Mer, France.

Sheila has over 25 years risk management experience within regulated public and private companies; industries include hospitality, financial services, non-profit sector associations and charities, mining, construction and water and power utilities. She has led the programs for internal audit, enterprise risk management and CSOX compliance (Canadian public company certification requirements under National Instrument 52-109). With her passion to support her own and others leadership development, I she completed a six-month coaching certification program with the Coaches Training Institute. She is also excited to offer the Harrison Assessment Services to support her clients with career suitability and development. In addition to coaching and mentoring in former leadership roles, she have been actively coaching leaders, managers and executive over the past few years.

An active member of the Institute of Internal Auditors over the past 15 years, Sheila currently serves the North American Advocacy Committee member and is a volunteer instructor for IIA public seminars. In the past she has served as the Chair of the Canadian Board; Nominating and Governance Committee Chair; Human Resources Advisory Committee member, Western Canada District Representative, an ex-officio member is on the Chapter Relations Committee of North America and within Canada, the Editorial Committee member, and Mastering Risk Awards Steering Committee member, IIA Canada’s Host Conference Committee as the Audit Leader Event Chair for both the Edmonton and Montreal conferences. While in Saskatoon, she served as the Saskatoon United Way Fundraising Campaign’s Profession’s Division Chair for three years. While in Vancouver, she served on the Board as treasurer for several years with the Sanford Housing Society, which is a non-profit housing society and charity that builds and manages homes for mental health consumers. Sheila currently serves as the Board Treasurer of McDougall House.

Sheila graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan and has obtained the following professional designations or certifications: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), the Certification of Risk Management Assurance (CRMA), the Audit Committee Certified (A.C.C.) designation from The Directors College (a joint venture of McMaster University and The Conference Board of Canada) and is a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach.
