Overview

This one day workshop will provide a sound overview of the differences between the current (legacy) Functional Skills English and maths and the reformed Functional Skills English and maths at Levels 1 and 2.

Activities will allow time to reflect on any changes needed within your organisation and start to formulate a transitional plan, to support a smooth implementation in September 2019.

The workshop is aimed at practitioners delivering, or managers supporting, the implementation of the reformed Functional Skills English and mathematics qualifications.

The Workshop will focus on:
  • establishing the differences between the legacy Level 1 and 2 English and mathematics Functional Skills and the reformed Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications;
  • identifying areas of increased challenge for learners and staff delivering the reforms;
  • planning for implementation and impact on resource and programme development;
  • planning for transitional requirements of the legacy qualifications and increased quality assurance for the revised versions.
Target Audience

Any provider – ITP/ College/ Employer Provider/ Adult and Community/Secure Estate etc. - delivering Functional Skills English and mathematics at Level 1 and Level 2, either as standalone qualifications, or as part of an Apprenticeship Programme, Traineeship or Study Programme.

Background

The development of the reformed Functional Skills English and mathematics was initiated to allow continued parity with the reformed 9-1 GCSEs in English and mathematics. By default this would always require additional stretch and challenge to be introduced. Although some of the more significant adjustments are at Entry and therefore appear to be minimal for Level 1 and Level 2, the impact will be significant due to the required aggregation of skills through all levels. From September 1st 2019, any learner, who is registered for the reformed Level 1 and Level 2 English and mathematics Functional Skills qualifications, will automatically be expected to have the required competence and understanding of Entry 1, 2 and 3 requirements. As a result when supporting learners to successfully achieve the outcomes, this must be taken into consideration to minimise the negative impact on first time pass and overall success rates.

It is expected that Ofsted will look favourably on organisations that develop and implement plans for the transition from the legacy Functional Skills at this early stage, because this will show strong leadership and management in support of the learner experience and demonstrate that learners are at the centre of programme planning and execution for these core subjects.
