Jeff Amerine

Jeff’s career has involved creating, financing and deploying high-tech products and services. He held senior leadership positions in seven startup ventures and three Fortune 500 companies.  Jeff’s current role at the University of Arkansas is to commercialize research in addition to teaching entrepreneurship. Jeff serves as a consultant to Innovate Arkansas which helps support the knowledge-based economy in Arkansas. Innovate Arkansas has served over 100 clients and has helped raise $75 million in public and private funding.Jeff also manages a tech-focused, angel investment fund called Gravity Ventures Arkansas, and the ARK ChallengeStartup Accelerator.Jeff holds a BS, Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy, and an MS in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas.

David Baxter

David brings 20 years of telecommunications and technology experience with innovation and industry leaders like NBTel, MT&T, iMagicTV and Alcatel. David’s product development and commercialization firsts include MT&T's MPoweredPC, Canada's first consumer DSL service with on-demand software store, and the world class iMagicTV and Alcatel IPTV platforms and applications for telecom digital TV.

As the VP of Innovation at T4G, David fosters a culture of creating customer value through innovation collisions inside and outside of T4G.

David is Chairman of the Board for PropelICT, serves on the board of Medrunner Health Solutions Inc. and is on the advisory boards of two Propel ICT Launch36 alumni companies, XipLinx and Tribeonomics.

Colin began his career as a runner in “The City”, the storied financial district of London, England. Over the past 30 years Colin worked as a broker, was a founder of Canada’s largest life science venture fund, and has focused on commercializing technology. Ben Forcier

Ben is a partner at Espresso Capital, a private venture debt fund backed by tech entrepreneurs, VCs and angel investors.   He is also an advisor to a number of technology companies in Atlantic Canada. More recently, he was Vice-President of Investment at Innovacorp, where he secured co-investors participating in rounds of financing that totaled over $35 million, put in place a successful EIR program and expanded Innovacorp’s scope by implementing a strategic fund of funds investment strategy. As part of this strategy, he led Innovacorp’s investment in an $80 million private Clean Energy Fund and secured commitments to seed the establishment of a regional venture capital fund. Previously, Ben was Director of Investor Relations of Telesystem International Wireless Inc. (TIW) where he directly helped secure more than $150 million in financing. TIW was later sold to Vodafone Group Plc (Nasdaq: VOD) for US$4.5 billion in 2005. Ben began his career at BCE Inc. which led him to roles in business development and venture investment at Bell Canada and BCE Capital (VC). He holds a B.Com. in Finance from Concordia University.

Thomas J. Hayes

Thomas J. Hayes is President & CEO of GrowthWorks Atlantic Ltd. Tom brings over 40 years of managerial and senior executive experience in the private, public and volunteer sectors to GrowthWorks.

During the 1980’s, Tom served as President of Atlantic Ventures Trust, an institutional private VC fund for Atlantic Canada. As CEO of Atlantic Fish Specialties Ltd, from 1987 -1997, Tom led the company through a major restructuring resulting in the company being recognized as a top small business in Canada winning the prestigious Canada Award for Business Excellence. He was also recognized as a winner in the Atlantic Canada Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Tom served as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Premier in Nova Scotia.

Tom currently serves on the Board of the Canadian Venture Capital Association. An active community volunteer he has served as Chair of APEC, a governor of St. Francis Xavier University, Chair of the Halifax-Dartmouth Port Development Commission and Vice-Chair Tall Ships 2000.

Adam Jackson

Adam Jackson is an entrepreneur, angel investor and advisor to early stage technology startups. He is co-Founder and runs product development at DriverSide, a venture-funded startup in the online automotive category. 

His previous business, MarketSquare (founded in 2004), was one of the first online local shopping destinations on the Internet.  In 2005 it was acquired by StepUp Commerce, a similar service, which was subsequently acquired by Intuit, Inc in September of 2006.

Adam began his career as a software engineer and architect.  His first business was an ecommerce consulting company that provided fraud detection software to the mortgage industry and various online shopping outlets.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University.
 
 Patrick Keefe

As vice president of investment at Innovacorp, Patrick oversees seed and early-stage venture capital activities. He also works hands-on with Innovacorp’s portfolio companies to assist them in accelerating their growth, achieving milestones and securing additional financing. also has over 15 years of highly relevant investment and entrepreneurial experience, including independently building a successful Starbucks Coffee business in Atlantic Canada, securing an exclusive license to operate. He opened 11 locations in five cities before they were acquired by Starbucks Corporation in 2008. Previously, Patrick held senior positions with Boston-based venture capital firm Atlas Venture and the Boston Consulting Group, which provides strategic advisory services for leading companies around the world. Patrick holds an M.Phil from Oxford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
 
 
Mark Kennedy

Mark Kennedy has a science, business and legal background. After working as a field chemist for an oil field service company, as a High School science teacher, and then as a lawyer where he specialized in utility litigation, he took a position as VP of strategic development for a local start-up. In 2000, Mark co-founded Celtx with Chad House, and thus began the odyssey of making Celtx in to a global brand for technology used in the creation of media.

Strue is a software startup on a mission to help enterprise overcome the barriers to cloud adoption. Peter MacNeil

As Manager of NSBI Venture Capital since inception in 2001, Mr. MacNeil brings more than 28 years of expertise in financing business and, more specifically, 13 years of venture capital experience. He is also a member of Canada’s Venture Capital & Private Equity Association and serves as a board member on a number of NSBI investee companies such as LED Roadway Lighting, Tech Link and Impath Technologies. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Mr. MacNeil holds a Commerce degree from Saint Mary’s University (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and is a graduate of Venture Capital Institute in the U.S. He also holds certificates in various industry training courses. In his spare time, Mr. MacNeil can be found on the green enjoying a round of golf and or at the rink coaching competitive curling.
 
 
 
Dan Martell

Dan Martell is the co-founder of Clarity a service that lets you get advice from the worlds best entrepreneurs over the phone. Previously he co-founded Flowtown a social marketing platform for small businesses, which was acquired by DemandForce.com in October 2011.

An award-winning Canadian entrepreneur, at 25, Dan formed his first start-up, Spheric Technologies Inc., and watched it grow by an average of 152% per year before he sold the company 4 years later in mid-2008. He's also an angel investor, having invested in over 18 companies in both Canada and the US. Now living in San Francisco, Martell spends the majority of his time looking at ways to build a bridge between Silicon Valley and his home province of New Brunswick, Canada.

Frank’s focus has been business solution delivery with expertise in technical project management and internet/mobile application design and delivery.   Frank has a Commerce degree from Dalhousie University, an Applied Information Technology (AIT) diploma from the Information Technology Institute (ITI) and is a Project Management Professional (PMP).

Mike Oliver is an experienced senior executive with 20+ years of experience ranging from system engineering, project management, business development, sales and general management roles in the energy, engineering and military/aerospace industries, in both start up and mature company environments. An electrical engineer, Mike has served on the Board of Directors of the Information Technology Association of Nova Scotia (ITANS), Enterprise Fredericton, and two start up that received New Brunswick Innovation Foundation investment. Mike is also a part-time instructor for UNB's Technology Management & Entrepreneurship program. Mike is currently VP Business Development and Sales of Atlantic Hydrogen Inc.
 

Nimeshh Patel

Nimeshh Patel has over 13 years of experience in the Investment Banking, Telecoms, Media and Internet sectors. His expertise lies in building strategies for profitability improvement through restructuring, operational excellence, and investment or partnership development.

He is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Accelerate Worldwide Limited, a commercial management firm focused on creating commercial advantage, brand value and in delivering results that ultimately maximise a company’s potential. They provide advisory (Turnaround, Revenue Enhancement) and transaction (Commercial Development, M&A, Capital raising)services to companies operating across the Internet, Media and Retail sectors.

Prior to Accelerate, he was Chief Operating Officer at AOL Europe having held several positions at the company specialising in Finance & Strategy. He played an instrumental role in turning around AOL Europe fortunes and led the due diligence and post acquisition integration processes associated with the acquisition of goviral A/S. Before coming to AOL, Nimeshh held the position of Associate Director, Equity Research Telecoms for ABN AMRO Bank where he was lead analyst covering stocks such as Telefonica, Portugal Telecom, KPN and British Telecom. Nimeshh holds an MBA from the Imperial College Tanaka Management School where he graduated with distinction.
 
 

Cheryl L. Paynter

Cheryl is a UPEI graduate (BBA '95) and earned her Chartered Accountant designation in 1997 and her Certified Financial Planner's designation in 1998 while articling at MacPherson Roche and Smith. Cheryl has worked extensively in private industry in varying levels of management of financial, operational and sales roles in the hospitality sector, most specifically with D.P. Murphy Inc. spanning an 18 year tenure.

Actively involved in community, Cheryl is a board member and Co-Chairs the Prince Edward Island Marathon and also sits on the Board of Governor's of the Atlantic Canada Economic Council.

Cheryl is past president and honorary life member of the Greater Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce, past Audit & Environment Chair and board member with Maritime Electric Co Ltd., past board member of various industry and community, and minor sporting groups. Cheryl lives in Charlottetown with her daughter Cassandra.

Gerry Pond has over 45 years of experience in the ICT sector. He is currently the Chairman of Mariner, a company he co-founded in 2003. Mariner is one of the largest independently owned IT companies in Atlantic Canada, and is a leading provider of Video Service Oriented MonitoringTM (vSOM) and management platforms for multiscreen networks. The Mariner Innovations division has expertise in application development, modernization and support/maintenance services. Mariner has a reputation for innovation; it supports new start-up IT businesses by providing financial support and access to both management and technical expertise.

Headquartered in Saint John, N.B., the company employs a staff of over 150 professionals with offices located across Canada, and has a growing customer base throughout North America, the Pacific Rim, EMEA and the Caribbean.

As the former CEO of NBTel (now Bell Aliant) and the former CEO of software start-up iMagicTV Inc., (acquired by Alcatel in 2003) Gerry is a passionate advocate of innovation. Over the past 10 years, he has co-founded 10 technology start-up companies. He is a Co-Founder of East Valley Ventures, a company dedicated to accelerating the growth of ICT companies in Atlantic Canada. He was a Co-Founder and Past Chairman of Radian6 (acquired by Salesforce.com in 2011) and Past Chairman of Q1 Labs (acquired by IBM in 2011).

In recognition of his achievements in innovation, Gerry was named “Innovator of the Year” in 1997 and inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Canadian Information Productivity Association. In 2011, Gerry was awarded “Canadian Angel of the Year” by Techvibes presented by KPMG.

A graduate of UNB (BA’66), Gerry received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University in 2005. In 2011, he co-founded the Pond-Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UNB, devoted to both social and economic enterprises.

Gerry resides in Rothesay, N.B., with his wife Anne. They have two children, Suzanne and Gregory, both graduates of UNB’s Faculty of Engineering.
 
 
 
Jennifer Robichaud

Jennifer is vice president of corporate resource development at Innovacorp, Nova Scotia’s venture capital organization. In this role, Jennifer focuses on human resources management, and facilitates annual business planning activities and corporate governance. Further, she extends both tactical and strategic human resources management advice to Innovacorp’s portfolio companies. Prior to joining Innovacorp in 2009, Jennifer spent 13 years in human resources for the oil and gas and financial industries.

Permjot Valia, who is based in London, UK, is the founder and CEO of Help with Sales Ltd. He has been an active business angel for the last few years and has made to date over 28 investments in start ups (including five in Canada). He writes about his experience of Angel Investing on his blog www.businessangelblog.com

Permjot was the lead private investor and chair of one UK based company which he helped sell to a listed Swedish business. In 2010, Permjot was nominated by Techcrunch as one of the top Start up mentors in Europe. He regularly mentors companies in the UK, South Africa and Canada.

In 2007, Permjot co-founded Flight & Partners, a fund management business which buys and helps to turn around distressed businesses. The firm currently manages around $20m of assets.

Prior to launching his business, Permjot was involved in a sales career and his last employed position was as Sales & Marketing Director of Ernst & Young, Entrepreneurial Services, London.

Permjot holds the Investment Management Certificate and is approved by the Financial Services Authority in the UK to carry out investment business. He also holds an MBA from the Open University and has an Honours degree in Economics from the University of Leeds.

Permjot currently lives between London and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Jeff has a tremendous amount of experience in leading financial divisions. Jeff was the CFO for Radian6 (acquired by Salesforce), CFO for Q1 Labs (acquired by IBM) and CFO for ImagicTV (acquired by Alcatel). He was also the Vice President of Corporate Finance for Deloitte & Touche where he assisted companies with the securing of debt and equity capital, and where he provided advising for mergers and acquisitions. Currently, in his role as COO for East Valley Ventures, Jeff works with ICT startups in the Maritime region, helping position them for and providing them with early stage investment capital and financial strategy to fulfill their commercialization aspirations.
 

Garnett Wilson

Garnett is Co-founder and CEO of Afinin Labs Inc., Adjunct Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, and Member of the Order of Wallace McCain. Garnett received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Dalhousie Univeristy in 2007.
