Professor Richard Barohn Chairman, University Distinguished Professor, Gertrude & Dewey Ziegler Professor, University of Kansas In 1998, he became the Lois C.A. and Darwin E. Smith Distinguished Chair in Neurological Mobility Research and the acting chairman of the department. In January 2001, he became the Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In 2007, he received an endowed chair, and was named as the Gertrude and Dewey Ziegler Professor of Neurology. In 2013, KU named him as a University Distinguished Professor, in recognition of his scholarly work. Dr. Barohn is board certified in adult neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with added qualifications in clinical neurophysiology and neuromuscular medicine. He is also certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr. Barohn holds membership in many professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurology (fellow status), the American Neurological Association, and the Association of University Professors of Neurology. He has been listed in The Best Doctors in America, national and central regions. Dr. Barohn is on the national medical advisory boards for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation and the Guillain-Barre Syndrome Foundation International and The Myositis Association. He was the recipient of the 2000 Alumni Achievement Award for Medicine from the University of Missouri - Kansas City and the University of Kansas Chancellor's Club Research Award in 2012. His present research focuses on myopathies, (such as polymyositis and muscular dystrophy) motor neuron diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), peripheral neuropathies, and myasthenia gravis. Dr. Barohn is the author of more than 200 journal publications and more than 50 book chapters on various aspects of neuromuscular disease. He has served on the editorial board for Neurology and is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Neuromuscular Disorders. He was the Founding Chair of the Section of Neuromuscular Disease in the American Academy of Neurology. He is the principal investigator on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational Science Award and the NeuroNEXT grant at KU Medical Center, and serves as the Director of Frontiers: The Heartland Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. | |
Eric Buenz Dr Eric Buenz completed his Doctorate in Biomedical Science at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, his Master of Business Administration at the University of St. Thomas, and his Master of Agriculture at the University of the South Pacific in Samoa. He is an expert in natural products, immunology, neurology, drug discovery and business development. He has secured United States Food and Drug Administration Investigational New Drug status for novel compounds and directed the associated clinical trials for these compounds at Mayo Clinic. Dr Buenz has authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, many in high-impact journals such as The British Medical Journal and Trends in Pharmacological Sciences; his work has also been covered in the popular press in publications such as The New York Times, The Economist, Wired, and The Scientist. He has a wide range of business management experience from successfully securing venture funding for start-up organisations, to serving on non-profit boards, advising governments and running departments of multinational firms. Dr Buenz served as the Director of Global Medical Affairs and Scientific Marketing in a private-equity held firm that was sold to Terumo, one of the largest medical companies, for 2.63B USD in 2012. | |

nerve surgery, Professor Gavin Davis has a major research interest in
tumours of peripheral nerves, including Pancoast tumours, and has lectured at

on peripheral nerve surgery in major national & international neurosurgical

Professor Gareth Parry Professor of Neurology Medical Director, Multiple Sclerosis Program and Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit University of Minnesota Minneapolis, MN Gareth Parry, MB, ChB, FRACP, is Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He also serves as Medical Director of the University of Minnesota MS Center and the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit. After receiving his medical degree from
the University of Otago Medical School in New Zealand, he came to the
United States to study neurology at the University of Pennsylvania. Before
joining the Department of Neurology at the University of Minnesota, he held
faculty appointments at the University of Pennsylvania, University of
California at San Francisco, and Louisiana State University at New
Orleans.
He was also Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the
University of Minnesota.
His career-long research interest has focused on
immune-mediated diseases of the nervous system, including multiple sclerosis
(MS). He has been the principal investigator for numerous research
studies of immunotherapies for MS.
He has served on the Medical
Advisory Board of the MS Society of Louisiana, and is currently Chair of the
Clinical Advisory Committee of the National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter.
His
research has been published in many book chapters and peer-reviewed journals
including Neurology, Muscle Nerve, andNeurophysiology. He is
also an ad hoc grant and journal reviewer, and serves on editorial boards. He
is an active member of professional organizations including his past role as
President of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. | |
Deborah Robinson Deb is the former All Blacks team doctor, having recently handed over the reins to Dr Tony Page. She is currently providing medical services for the Crusaders. Deb consults in all aspects of sports medicine with a special interest in issues of children and adolescents in sport. | |
Dr Alice Theadom Deputy Director of NISAN / Senior Lecturer Alice is a
NZ Registered Psychologist. She undertook her training in the UK, completing
her undergraduate honours degree in Psychology at the University of Essex and
MSc in Health Psychology at Surrey University. Alice subsequently completed a
period of supervised training in psychology and the Stage 2 Qualification in
Health Psychology through the British Psychological Society. Alice leads the
traumatic brain injury and neuromuscular research programmes at NISAN and is
also involved in research into the psychological aspects of living with a
