The Instructors

Michael J. Kocurek, PhD Professor Emeritus of Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, is one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry. His focus is on Pulp & Paper Technology, Paper Properties, and Workforce and Professional Development. He has taught paper properties and pulp & paper technology courses to students, and in mill short courses for technical personnel and operators for over 40 years. He is the editor of 11 books, including the recognized Pulp and Paper Manufacture series covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He has authored / co-authored 12 distance learning video courses, including Tissue Manufacturing Technology and the Introduction to Pulp & Paper series- again covering the entire field of pulp & paper.

Dr. Kocurek received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in Paper Science & Engineering from the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Syracuse University. He has served as Paper Science Department Head at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, an academic program he founded; and NC State University. His honors include TAPPI Fellow, TAPPI Distinguished Service Award, and induction into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame – an honor bestowed to recognize people who have made preeminent contributions to the global paper industry.  mike_kocurek@ncsu.edu 

Roger Banks
Press Product Manager-Tissue for AstenJohnson, Inc. Roger has 41 years of experience in the Paper Machine Clothing Industry, all in Press.  He joined AstenJohnson in 2003 as Press Product Manager. In that role, Roger is responsible for  product development, product design, product application and marketing of tissue press products. Roger has an  A.S. degree in Textiles and a B.S. degree in Business.  roger.banks@astenjohnson.com

William (Bill) Bonds, AstenJohnson, Bill has 33 years of experience in the Tissue Paper Industry.  Bill joined AstenJohnson in 2004 serving as a Field Sales/Service Engineer later a Tissue Grade Expert for North America.  Before joining AstenJohnson, Bill spent many years as a Tissue Paper Maker, Electrical Design Engineer, Process Control Engineer, E&I Project Engineer, and Production Superintendent.  Bill graduated in 1989 from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a BSEE degree.   bill.bonds@astenjohnson.com

Bruce W. Janda, Co-founder and Principal of InnovaSpec, LLC http://www.innovaspec.com Bruce has over 36 years of experience in the Paper and Nonwoven industry, specializing in Tissue and Towel Processes and Products.  Bruce held positions in the Tissue industry at Georgia-Pacific, Kimberly-Clark and others with roles in Product Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing.  He worked on the supplier side at AstenJohnson as the Product Manager for TAD and Forming Fabrics in addition to leading serving as the North American Product Business Leader and Global Innovation Leader for Forming. 

Bruce has extensive applications experience on World Class, high speed Tissue and TAD machines in North America and Europe both as a producer and supplier.  He had the opportunity to participate in three new tissue machine projects as process design leader, construction supervisor, and checkout/start up leader.  Bruce has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, MBA from University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, Executive Scholar Certificate from the Kellogg School of Northwestern University, and Lean Sigma Black Belt Certification from AstenJohnson.  He has 14 US patents issued and 3 pending, all related to Tissue and papermaking.  One of his key product development projects was leadership of the eMotion® electronic towel dispenser and TAD towel from concept through manufacturing and commercialization.  This now represents a $1 billion/year sales brand for Georgia-Pacific.

Peter E. McCabe, Tissue Business Leader for AstenJohnson, Inc., Peter has 30 years of experience in the Paper industry specializing in the Tissue and Towel segment. In 2002, he joined AstenJohnson as the Product Manager, Design and Applications Specialist for Tissue Forming and TAD fabrics. In that role, Peter managed the innovation, design and commercialization of Tissue forming and TAD fabrics. In addition, he led the field application efforts for these products in the North American and European markets. He has extensive applications experience on World Class, high speed Tissue and TAD machines. Prior to joining AstenJohnson, Peter was with Georgia-Pacific Resins and Hercules Incorporated, specializing in the application of Performance Chemicals for the Tissue, P&W and Packaging markets. Peter has a B.S. degree in Chemistry and Business from theUniversity of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.

Lucyna M. Pawlowska, Tissue Process Application Specialist working for Kemira North America. She interfaces closely with Kemira’s sales and research and development, as well as the mill production staff to facilitate product development and the introduction of products into the market place. Prior to her current position, she worked in paper chemicals R&D for 18 yrs., developing new products such as retention aids, temporary wet strength resin, dry strength resins, internal and surface sizing agents, emulsifiers for sizing agents, softeners and tissue creping aids. She has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the Charter Oak State College, Newington, CT, and a Master Degree of Commodities Engineering from the University of Economy, Krakow, Poland. She relocated from Poland to U.S.A. in 1988 and gained her US citizenship in 1993. In 1991 she started her career in the paper chemicals industry with American Cyanamid. Due to a series of spin offs and acquisitions in the paper chemicals industry, during her career she worked for Cytec Industries, Bayer, Bayer Chemicals and Lanxess. Jeff Peters – BTG Americas, Jeff  graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Chemical Engineering.  He started his career with Hercules Incorporated.  Over his 23 year career he spent time in field sales, Global Tissue Applications, Tissue Business Management and Global Tissue Marketing.  Jeff left the paper industry for a few years to test his entrepreneurial spirit.  Three years ago he joined BTG Americas as their Tissue Applications Manager.
