ABM Australia/New Zealand Regional Conference welcomes you to our second conference:

Online content available until 31st May 2021

Following our very successful conference in 2018, we welcome you to Breastfeeding Medicine: Evidence and Clinical Practice 2021, the second conference for the Australia/New Zealand Region of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. From the novice to the experienced, this conference, specifically designed by doctors for doctors, is for you.

As you may be aware, we had to make significant changes to our conference originally scheduled for May 2020, to go to a totally on-line conference in February 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the adjusted format allows the content from both live streamed (then recorded) and pre-recorded on-demand presentations to be available until the 31st May 2021 for those unable to attend the ‘live’ event. Workshops that were held on the 13th and 14th February were not able to be recorded because of the interactive nature of the presentations.

We thank you and the entire ABM community for your understanding, patience and ongoing support of the success of this conference.

Pre-Conference

No recordings of the workshops are available because of the interactive nature of the presentations.
Two pre-conference workshops were held on consecutive days, Saturday 13th February 2021 and Sunday 14th February 2021. The first, Breastfeeding Essentials for Medical Practitioners, was designed to give medical practitioners breastfeeding information on issues relevant to their medical practice. It included: risks of not breastfeeding; the process of breastfeeding and normal breastfeeding management; how to provide breastfeeding support within a medical practice; managing maternal and infant complications; common breastfeeding problems (eg breast and nipple problems, mastitis and growth faltering); and medication use while breastfeeding. Participants watched four pre-recorded presentations and completed pre-readings before the interactive sessions on the day.

The second workshop Beyond the Essentials: Advanced Topics in Breastfeeding Medicine, was designed for more experienced practitioners, especially those who had already attended Breastfeeding Essentials for Medical Practitioners. It included sessions about breastfeeding research, difficult and unusual cases, different breastfeeding medicine practice models and advocacy in the workplace. There were also pre-recorded presentations.

Main Conference

The two-day conference consisted of thought-provoking international and local speakers providing clinical information on current issues in Breastfeeding Medicine. In addition, there are pre-recorded, on-demand presentations. Both pre-recorded and recorded live presentations cover a wide variety of issues that occur in clinical practice and include information about the effect of COVID19 on breastfeeding women and medical staff as well as experiences of telehealth.  All presentations are available for viewing until 31st May 2021. The conference is especially relevant for General Practitioners, Paediatricians and Obstetricians. The agenda for Saturday 20th February was designed specifically for doctors although registration for both days is open all those interested in helping women to breastfeed. The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM), founded in 1995, is dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. It is an international multi-specialty medical practitioner organisation, with more than 700 members from more than 58 countries.

Membership is available for all registered/licensed medical practitioners and dentists. ABM is a core partner of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action and is affiliated with the United Nations Department of Public Information. Annual conferences have been held in the US for more than 20 years and in 2019 the first international conference will be held in the United Kingdom. Regional conferences have also been held bi-annually in Europe for more than 10 years. This is the second time a regional conference has been held in the Australia/New Zealand region.

ABM's peer reviewed journal, Breastfeeding Medicine, published 6 times per year, is one of the many benefits of being a member of ABM. Access to a members-only listserv for those difficult breastfeeding queries, reduced conference registration fees, first and easy access to evidence-based protocols on 31 different breastfeeding topics and connections with doctors (and more recently dentists) with an interest in breastfeeding from all over the world are other advantages.

Find out more about ABM and how to join by visiting the website www.bfmed.org or follow us on Facebook. You may wish to join ABM before registering for the conference to receive discounted conference registration.
