About the Packaging Design Awards

As part of the seventh annual Wine Packaging Conference, Wine Business Monthly is sponsoring a competition to choose the most outstanding wine packages on the market. A jury of wine industry professionals will determine the winners in seven (7) categories.

All wines made with grapes from North American appellations have the opportunity to be recognized. The winning entries will be featured in the September 2020 issue of Wine Business Monthly and featured at wbmpack.com.

People’s Choice
In addition to being entered in the juried wine packaging competition, the top finalists will automatically be entered into the People’s Choice category. The finalists will be displayed at the Wine Packaging Conference, where all attendees will have a chance to vote for the most outstanding package.


How to Enter

  1. Complete online entry form by June 17, 2020 (form will be live January 13, 2020).

  2. Send your package and a copy of your online receipt by Wednesday, June 24, 2020 to:

    * If you are submitting multiple entries, an online receipt is required for each entry.

3. If your package includes multiple pieces, please label the pieces that should be included in the contest. Please mark multiple box shipments with box number and total number of boxes shipped (box 1 of 3, box 2 of 3, etc.).

4. For entries in the Best Classic Format Package Design and Best Luxury Package Design, only 1 piece will be judged.

5. For entries in the Best Can Design and Best Alternative Format Package Design categories, packages should be submitted exactly as they are sold at retail.

6. For entries in the Best Package Redesign category, send the former package along with the redesigned package. (2 pieces total)

7. For entries in the Best Package Series Design category, submit between two (2) and five (5) packages from the series.

8. For entries in the Best Assorted Set category, entries should be submitted as they would be received by the consumer.

Please note that case packs and other packaging accessories will not be judged.


Rules and Eligibility
You are eligible to compete if you are a North American winery, wine industry packaging supplier or graphic designer. The package is eligible if it contains wine from a North American appellation, was produced (filled) between May 1, 2017, through May 1, 2020, and is currently available or was available to the general public between those dates. For purposes of this contest, submissions can include wine boxes, wine bottles, wine bags or cans. 3-liter maximum. No individual parts or prototypes—complete packages only. Submissions from previous years may be resubmitted if: 1. The entry is still eligible and 2. If it was not a medal winner in the category in which it is being entered. Please note that entry into the contest does not guarantee that the entered package will be displayed at the conference (see below). Wine Business Monthly reserves the right to photograph any entry and reproduce it in publications, conference marketing efforts, on our website and social media. Please ensure that you have your brand owners consent before entering.

Wine Business Monthly may refuse any entries that arrive after June 24, 2020. The entrant is responsible for the shipping costs of their wine. Double check that the wines shipped match the entry form. Wine Business Monthly is not responsible for any lost or damaged entries. Wine Business Monthly will not return wines that were sent incorrectly. Entries submitted without completing online entry form will not be accepted.

Please note that packaging samples will not be returned. Packaging samples will be donated to various local college wine/enology programs. Submission fees are non-refundable for any reason and are due at time of entry submission.

Professionally Juried Judging
The 2020 Pack Design Awards will be judged by an independent panel of wine industry and design industry experts.

The winners will be announced in August 2020.

Judging Criteria
Category: Best Classic Format Package Design
This category is open to traditional 750ml bottle molds. Packages will be judged on their visual appeal, design functionality, appropriateness for the price segment and the creative utilization of the classic bottle format. Note: Only 1 bottle per entry should be submitted for this category.

 

Category: Best Can Design
Open to any package housed in an aluminum can. Packages will be judged on their visual appeal, design functionality, appropriateness for the price segment and creative utilization of the can packaging format. Note: Packages should be submitted exactly as they are sold at retail.


Category: Best Alternative Format Package Design
This is open to any packaging not in a classic bottle or can format. Examples include: single serve, wine boxes, bags, plastic, large format, etc. Packages will be judged on their visual appeal, design functionality, appropriateness for the price segment and creative utilization of the alternative packaging format. Note: Packages should be submitted exactly how they are sold at retail.

Category: Best Luxury Package Design
Open to any packaging format that retails for $40 and higher at a 750ml equivalent, whose packages are designed to compete and succeed on high-end restaurant wine lists and in fine wine shops against luxury wines from around the world. Packages will be judged on their visual appeal, design functionality, appropriateness for the price segment and quality of packaging materials used. Note: Only 1 bottle per entry should be submitted for this category.

Category: Best Package Redesign
To enter this category, please send the former package along with the redesigned package (2 bottles total). The redesign must have been introduced to the marketplace between May 1, 2017, and May 1, 2020. Packages will be judged on the successfulness of the redesign, their visual appeal, design functionality and appropriateness for the price segment.

Category: Best Package Series Design
The Best Package Series Design is open to entries consisting of two or more pieces that work together as a cohesive whole. To enter this category, please submit between two (2) and five (5) packages from the series. Packages will be judged on the cohesiveness of the series, their visual appeal as a series and as individual bottles, design functionality and appropriateness for the price segment.

Category: Best Assorted Set Design
This is category is open to gift packs, holiday sets, wooden boxes, subscription packs and presentation cases. To be eligible for this category, your entry must include the case along with the wine housed within the case. Sets will be judged on the cohesiveness of the set, their visual appeal as a set and as individual pieces, design functionality and appropriateness for the price segment. Note: Entries should be submitted as they would be received by the consumer. This category is not open to cardboard shipping boxes.

Please note that cardboard shipping boxes and other packaging accessories will not be judged.

People’s Choice Balloting
Conference attendees will have access to vote prior to the event. People's Choice is open to all submissions. Exhibitors will be allowed one ballot per company. Voting will end at 11:00am August 4, 2020. The winner will be announced following the final session. The winners package(s) will be displayed on the PACK 2020 Home page.


Prizes
The winners will be announced following each session on August 4, 2020. Your product will also appear in the September 2020 issue of Wine Business Monthly, be featured at wbmpack.com and in all Wine Business Monthly social media outlets.
