We are excited to welcome you to

NIDO2020 - the XVth INTERNATIONAL NIDOVIRUS SYMPOSIUM Egmond aan Zee, The Netherlands, May 10-14, 2020

Enjoy the chance to interact with old friends and collaborators, and meet new people to broaden your nidovirus horizons and beyond. Present your latest research to a dedicated audience of around 200 participants, and learn about the most recent and groundbreaking scientific insights in the nidoviral molecular biology, pathogenesis, interactions with the immune system, determinants of virulence, mechanisms of transmission and epidemiology, phylogeny, host range, diagnosis, strategies for prevention, development of vaccines and antiviral therapies, and more.

Feel welcome at the conference venue, your “holiday-feel” place to stay Hotel Zuiderduin, beautifully refurbished (for those who remember the NIDO2003 edition), with in-house swimming pool, spa/wellness area, bar and bowling alley, and only a mere 350 meters away from the white sand of the spacy and broad Egmond beach, with its numerous restaurants, terraces and bars looking out over the stunning North Sea.

You are cordially invited to this special edition of the International Nidovirus Symposia, which are a triannual gathering of scientists from around the world who are interested in nidoviruses. This large order of enveloped, plus strand RNA viruses contains members such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, two zoonotic coronaviruses of similar characteristics, which emerged in the human population in 2002 (Asia) and 2012 (Saudi Arabia) respectively. While SARS-CoV has been effectively contained, MERS-CoV infections are still being reported continuously, primarily in Saudi Arabia, and 35% of diagnosed patients succumb to the infection. Recent efforts, stimulated by WHO and other worldwide health organizations, are now cumulating towards testing useful vaccines against this virus in clinical trials.

Also in the veterinary world nidoviruses play a major role, with porcine reproductive and respiratory arterivirus (PRRSV) being the number 1 viral threat to the pig industry worldwide. Recent severe outbreaks of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and ongoing problems with infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in poultry industries are other examples of the societal and economic importance of nidovirus infections.

Current fundamental as well as strategic research investigating these viruses provide pivotal insights into their biology, which will prepare human society for new outbreaks with these and similar viruses in the future.
