Bio
Lorraine Cichowski is SVP and CIO of Associated Press, which supplies multimedia news to newspapers, radio and television stations and websites as well as news to consumers via smartphones and tablets. She oversees a department of 500 software developers, engineers and others as well as a global support staff for AP’s 243 bureaus in 97 countries. Over the past eight years, Lorraine helped to engineer a technology transformation that turned AP from an analog wire service to a fully digital, Web-based operation. Key projects include new editorial systems for AP’s 2,500 print, video and photo journalists, a new HD digital video distribution system, a re-launch of AP websites to improve search and add e-commerce functionality, a Web-based registry to tag and track online content and innovative mobile products. Lorraine began her career as a journalist for AP. She joined USA TODAY at the launch of the national newspaper in 1982 and spent 18 years there as a reporter and editor and then founder and publisher of usatoday.com. After a brief tenure at an Internet start-up, she returned to AP in 2004 in product development. She took over the Technology Department in 2006. Lorraine has a law degree from George Mason University, a master’s degree in communications-public affairs journalism from American University and a bachelor’s degree in English from Seton Hall University.
