Thomas Vitsounis is project leader of the “Total Port Logistics” project at National ICT Australia (NICTA). He is currently working on a series of projects for the development of a Port Community System in Australia, optimisation and simulation of port supply chains, modeling container port throughput, developing key indicators for container terminals and many more.  

From August 2011 until April 2012, Thomas acted as an advisor of the Secretary General for Ports and Ports Policy, Ministry of Competitiveness, Development and Shipping, Greece. Thomas had a key role in the “Port Performance Indicators: Selection and Measurement – PPRISM” project, undertaken by the European Seaports Organization (ESPO) and researchers from several European Universities (2010-2011). From 2012 until mid-2013, Thomas has been a regular contributor to the European Commission (DG Mare).  

Thomas has been a PENED Research Fellow at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport (STT), School of Business, University of the Aegean, and completed his PhD entitled “Balanced Port Performance Analysis: Port Users and Service providers Interactions, Generation of Relationships, and Measurement of Perceived Value” in early 2011. He has also been a Research Fellow (Jean Monnet in European Port Policy) at the same Department (2010-2011) and contributed (2006-2011) as a Teaching Assistant in the following courses: Maritime Economics, International Maritime Policy, Port Planning & Policy, Port Management and European Port Policy.

He has a track record of more than 30 research papers published in various academic journals, books and presented in international conferences, and 10 ports and shipping related projects. He is a founding member of Porteconomics.eu, a web-based initiative advancing knowledge exchange on port economics, management & policies. His fields of expertise include ports management, economics and policy, port performance measurement, port users satisfaction and perceived value and port stakeholders’ relationships and interactions, shipping line’s strategy and management.
