David Hunt is an advisor to the Directorate General of Customs in the Sultanate of Oman. His current role is as a business advisor to the Director General of Customs on process improvement and modernization of customs procedures while leading development of the Oman standardized data set for international trade and transport reporting. This is a critical part of the Oman Customs single electronic window and integrated customs management system project, called the Bayan systems.

Prior to working in Oman David was a Customs officer in Australia, commencing as a trainee in Melbourne in 1983 he worked as a frontline officer conducting cargo examinations, customs entry processing, patrol, ship search and airport passenger operations before moving on to Intelligence and Investigations. In 1993 David moved to the EDIFICE project as a user representative, providing a first exposure to EDI messaging and international standards and information management. Issues which have remained as core issues for him since, through the balance of his Australian customs time and now Oman.

David has been working with the WCO Data Model since 2002 and has represented Australia and more recently Oman at the WCO Data Model Project Team development meetings and the Information Management Sub-Committee. He chaired the DMPT for approximately two years during development of version 3.0 of the Data Model.
