Bill was appointed Director UK Customs in April 2013 and is responsible for UK Customs policy, systems, procedures and legislation, compilation and dissemination of the UK’s trade statistics and international relations. UK Customs collects over £34 billion a year; keeps around £700 billion of imports and exports moving, and has around 190,000 business customers. 

Bill is currently Vice Chair of the WCO Finance Committee. Bill joined HM Customs & Excise as an administrative officer in 1986. As well as Customs, his career has seen him work extensively in VAT, business change, strategy and planning, legal services, finance and intelligence. Prior to being appointed as Director UK Customs, Bill held the positions of Director Excise & Environmental Taxes, Deputy Director UK Customs and Portfolio Director of the UK’s customs and border IT systems modernisation programme.
