Director and Principal Health and Safety Advisor Guard Safety Ltd Bio Darren Guard is the Director and Principal Health and Safety Advisor of Guard Safety Ltd, maritime safety specialists. Darren has extensive knowledge of the fishing industry having worked his way up through the family fishing business ‘Guard Fishing’ from crew to skipper to Managing Director over 20 years – without any serious accidents. He has worked with Maritime New Zealand and was Sealord’s Offshore Health and Safety Manager. Darren was heavily involved in delivering the FishSAFE programme from 2004-2009; has gained the NEBOSH IGC qualification; holds his Offshore Masters; is a Technician Member of IOSH and on the executive for the Nelson branch of NZISM. He has worked with fishing companies to drive improved health and safety initiatives since 2012. Darren remains committed to keeping fishers safe and healthy, and has been a key player in the formation and functioning of the Fishing Industry Safety Forum. Darren lives in Nelson with his family, and enjoys heading out into the deep blue for some fishing.
