Title Director of Economic Empowerment Company U.S. Chamber’s Corporate Citizenship Center Bio Shamarukh Mohiuddin is the Director of the Economic Empowerment Program at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Corporate Citizenship Center. She helps global businesses harness their efforts to promote economic empowerment in underserved communities globally and in the United States. The program catalyzes cross-sector partnerships and equips businesses to be drivers and advocates for inclusive and sustainable growth. It includes a special focus on business’s role in promoting women’s economic empowerment through helping them overcome barriers to economic independence, entrepreneurship and leadership through access to skills, education, finance, technology and health services. Prior to joining the Corporate Citizenship Center, Shamarukh served as the Executive Director of the U.S.-Bangladesh Advisory Council where she led the organization’s programs, operations and policy advocacy initiatives. She advised U.S. and Bangladesh government officials on a range of issues including foreign policy, trade and investment, labor standards, aid effectiveness and environmental protection. She also provided expertise and counsel to corporate investors in Bangladesh. During this time, she also served on a high level Asia Society task force on investment. Shamarukh is also the founder of a nonprofit, Lift Up Asia which is implementing economic empowerment programs in Asia. Previously, Shamarukh served as Director at the Business Council for Global Development (BCGD) where she led high quality programming and advocacy initiatives for a coalition of Fortune 100 businesses on issues including trade capacity building, rule of law and sustainability. She also served as a Fellow at GlobalWorks Foundation and as Director of GlobalWorks’ Trade, Aid and Security Coalition (TASC) where she ran a successful Congressional briefing series, developed NGO-business coalitions, and policy initiatives to enable the world’s poorest to reap the benefits of globalization. During this time she also served as Director at Fontheim International where she advised companies on government relations and corporate social responsibility. Shamarukh was previously a Research Associate at the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) and Democratic Leadership Council where she helped formulate “Third Way” approaches on U.S. trade and environmental policy. She also did short term assignments at the Council on Foreign Relations, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the World Bank.Shamarukh has written a number of editorials, policy reports, a journal article, and spoken at numerous public events. She has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Voice of America, The Nation, Baltimore Post Examiner, Inside U.S. Trade and international dailies. She holds an M.A. in International Relations and South Asia Studies from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) where she was the recipient of the Sambhi Fellowship and B.A. and B.S. degrees in International Affairs and Financial Economics from the University of Maine. Shamarukh speaks English, Bengali, basic Hindi and French.
