Valerie D. Lewis is Assistant Vice President and Assistant Secretary, Legal, with Safeway Inc. Prior to joining the Company in 1995, Valerie was engaged in the private practice of law in both state and federal courts. Ms. Lewis is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she was an Echols Scholar. She received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and is admitted to practice in both California and Michigan (inactive). Ms. Lewis has corporate-wide responsibility for food, health, safety, consumer protection and labeling issues, environmental and other regulatory compliance and litigation, as well as Proposition 65 (California), commercial, product liability and general litigation. Ms. Lewis is also integrally involved in the development of policy and training, and she is responsible for the implementation of and compliance with consumer, corporate and intellectual technology privacy issues. She managed the Company’s HIPAA implementation as well as its early pharmacy regulatory compliance. Ms. Lewis is also responsible for proactively identifying opportunities to inform and educate customers as it relates to these areas. She is a frequent participant on continuing legal education and trade organization programs. Ms. Lewis sits on the board of Ramsell Corporation, where she chairs the Compensation Committee. She recently served as Vice President of the Alameda Health System Board of Trustees, one of the largest public hospital systems in the country ($1B). She chaired the Governance Committee and sat on the Finance, Audit and Quality Committees. She serves as Secretary of the Executive Leadership Council (ELC), on the Board of Trustees of Talladega College (an HBCU). Ms. Lewis is a member of the Board of Directors of the Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce. She is also a member of the California Litigation Advisory Committee, the National and California Chambers of Commerce Legal Protection and Reform Advisory Committees, and the California Grocers Association and the California Retailers Association Legal Advisory Committees. In 2013, Ms. Lewis was named by the California Diversity Council to its list of the “Most Powerful & Influential Women in California.” In 2012 and 2013, Ms. Lewis was recognized by On Being a Black Lawyer in its “Power 100” list. Also in 2012, Savoy Magazine named Ms. Lewis to its “Top Influential Women in Corporate America” list. Ms. Lewis was recognized by the San Francisco Business Times, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, and Santa Clara University Law School as a finalist in the “Top Corporate Counsel in the Bay Area,” Community Champion. In 2011, Ms. Lewis was named one of the “Top Women in Retail and Finance” by Women of Color magazine for her strong commitment to her community, leadership as a role model for young and upcoming leaders, and senior position in her company. Ms. Lewis was selected as one of Savoy magazine’s “2010 Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America” in 2010. She was also recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the “Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business,” 2010 and 2015, and “Forever Influential,” 2011 – 2014. In 1987, Ebony Magazine recognized Ms. Lewis as one its “Future Leaders 30 and Under.” Ms. Lewis was selected as one of Savoy Magazine’s “2010 Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America.” In 1987 Ebony Magazine recognized Ms. Lewis as one its “Future Leaders 30 and Under.” Ms. Lewis is a past President of the California Association of Black Lawyers, Executive Committee Member of the National Bar Association, and Vice Chair of the American Bar Association Corporate Counsel Committee, General Practice Section. She is a past member of the McFittredge Inn of Court, California State Bar Committee on the Administration of Justice and both the National Bar and Alameda County Bar Associations’ Judicial Nomination Evaluation Committees. Ms. Lewis served on the Youth Law Center Board of Directors (Treasurer). Ms. Lewis is a past member of the Board of Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD). She is also a past Trustee of the Alta Bates Medical Center, past Chair of the Bay Area Urban League, Director of the Oakland Ballet Theater and Commissioner of the City of Oakland Environmental Affairs Commission. Ms. Lewis is a member of the International Women’s Forum, The Links, Incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and The Twelve Days of Christmas, Inc.
