Ilse Beunen, Somu

Ilse, a Somu level Sogetsu Instructor, began her relationship with nature as a landscape architect in Nagaoka, Japan.  Her Sogetsu studies took off in the 1990s in Yokohama, Japan. She returned to her home of Belgium, and was soon doing, solo exhibitions and exhibitions with her students all around Europe.

In 2009, Ilse became responsible for the semi-annual Sogetsu Azalea Study Group exhibitions; and in 2014 she became Chairperson of this group. In 2016, together with Anne-Riet Vugts of the Dutch Branch, she worked with and translated during the Florally in Ghent for the staff of Iemoto Akane Teshigahara during the building of the bamboo installation, the demonstration and the workshop.

In 2015 and 2016 she realized several of her dreams:  she published her book Exploring Ikebana, published by Stichting Kunstboek;  she also started her Ikebana newsletter, which now has subscribers internationally; she introduced an international class for teachers; and, she also began her Sogetsu ikebana lessons in a video platform.

In April 2017, Ilse received the Akane Teshigahara Overseas Award.

In addition to her Sogetsu ikebana work, Ilse continues her garden and landscape business, specializing in Japanese gardens.
