Description

Changes in the working environment and recent regulatory reforms will have profound implications for the future of occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals. As a consequence there has been an increased demand for OHS tertiary qualifications by industry, professional and government organisations. The aim of this workshop is to examine under-graduate and post-graduate offerings and competencies required by the next generation of OHS professionals.

The objectives are:

  1. to strengthen the existing tertiary education networks and collaborations;
  2. to aggregate current expertise; and,
  3. to discuss current and emerging issues in OHS tertiary education with the aim of to developing a national educational strategy for OHS professionals.

The workshop is inclusive and open to anyone who has an interest in the future of the OHS profession. The structure of the facilitated workshop will begin with a brief presentation from representatives from each of the universities and/or the different disciplines and other key stakeholder agencies to address the following:
  1. what are their current OHS courses/programmes; and
  2. what are the knowledge gaps and emerging issues in terms of the general OHS profession and more specifically the particular discipline(s)?

The presenters will be informed by prior discussions within their organisation/discipline.

Following the presentations there will be a general forum around how to strengthen the OHS profession and the sub-disciplines within tertiary education and what are the barriers we need to overcome?

The workshop will conclude with a collaborative, proposed national strategy.
