Mr Michel Neeff FRACS

Neurotologist/Skull Base Surgeon, Hearing Implant Surgeon; Clinical Director, Starship Child Health, Auckland, NZ

Michel graduated from The University of Auckland and completed his training in Otolaryngology, HNS with The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

He completed a fellowship in Manchester, UK in 2006 (skull base procedures including acoustic neuroma surgery, auditory implant surgery, oncological surgery involving the posterolateral skull base, as well as complex otological surgery). Since 2007 he has worked as a consultant at Starship Children’s Hospital, Auckland City Hospital and Green Lane Hospital. He is the Clinical Director at Starship Children's Hospital.

He is a Senior Lecturer at the Auckland Medical School, and Chairperson and Implant Surgeon for the Northern Cochlear Implant Programme (NCIP).

6 Patients Receiving ABIs in Auckland - An update on Auditory Brainstem Implants performed in Auckland

This is a review of the indications, surgery and outcomes of 6 patients who received brain stem implants in Auckland this year. Results after the first 6 months will be reviewed and discussed.

Expanding Indications for Cochlear Implantation

For NZ patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, public funding is available for bilateral cochlear implants in children and a unilateral cochlear implant in some adults.

But there are other, non funded (privately funded) indications that need to be considered when counselling patients presenting with hearing loss and associated symptoms. This paper presents the results of a small series of patients receiving cochlear implants for these expanding indications, incl single sided deafness, tinnitus, asymmetrical hearing loss.
