Phil Bird is an Otologist and Neurotologist at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Christchurch Hospital and in private practice in Christchurch. He is a surgeon in the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme which is based in Christchurch, and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Otago, Christchurch. After completing otolaryngology, head and neck surgery training in Wellington and Christchurch, he completed a fellowship in otology and neurotology at the University of Miami. His clinical interests include general and paediatric otology, cochlear implantation and lateral skull base surgery.

His research interests include clinical outcomes of cochlear implant surgery, pharmacokinetics of intratympanic steroids and inner ear effects of middle ear surgery. He has approximately 50 peer reviewed publications to date.
