Introduction

Veterinary practices require leaders to create the roadmap for success and to help guide the rest of the team on their journey. The leaders of any practice need effective tools and methods to continuously communicate with their teams, holding them accountable to both personal and practice goals.

Objectives

In this workshop, attendees will learn about self-awareness and associated techniques to help improve leadership ability. This training will allow attendees to identify and respond to emotions giving them a toolkit to remain emotionally self-aware during stressful situations. We will identify events that lead to an emotional hijack, techniques to reflect, and skills to reconnect with coworkers after the event. Additionally, attendees will explore empathy and the ability to read emotions in others.

Implications

Participants will leave this workshop with a better understanding of the importance of self-awareness and empathy skills in becoming a more effective leader in their practice. Through guided activities, they will return to their practice with a toolkit of resources and techniques to allow them to better understand their feelings, emotions, and bodily sensations as they happen and understand how they affect job performance. By learning more about emotions within themselves, attendees will also be able to use newly developed empathy skills to improve communication with their team.
