Liz is a Paediatric Intensive Care Specialist at the
Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland and the first Director of the unit, appointed
at the beginning of 1991 to plan and initiate this service. The unit opened in December 1991 with 7 beds,
expanding to 9 beds 5 years later.
She oversaw the early development of the Starship CED
and emergency services, intravenous nutrition service, the PICU
transport/retrieval service and the design of the new 16 bed unit which opened
in November 2003 to cater for both general and cardiac paediatric populations.
Liz remained director until 2003, handing over to Dr
John Beca at the time of the opening of the new PICU. Her interests include nutrition and injury
prevention, particularly focused on car restraints and a vocal proponent for
the use of booster seats for school aged children.
