Gerhard F. Huber is Professor of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at University of Zurich and Surgeon at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland. He trained at Zurich, Basel and Calgary Medical Schools. He has led the Head and Neck Service in Zurich for over 10 years, is President of the Swiss Head and Neck Society and a member of the Swiss ENT Board. His clinical focus is on general H&N tumour surgery, endoscopic thyroid and parathyroid surgery and robotic surgery.

Dr Huber has focused the bulk of his research on predictive tumour makers, orphan malignancies in the head and neck and (para) thyroid surgery which has resulted in over 90 peer reviewed publications.

The Zurich Experience in (Para-) Thyroid Surgery 

A Review of interdisciplinary board discussions on thyroid and parathyroid cases: Our approach to critically ill cardiac patients in need for thyroid surgery, the interdisciplinary management of complex cases with necessity of extended tumour resections including larynx, pharynx, oesophagus and mediastinal structures and voice rehabilitation after RLN resections/paralysis. Presentation of the Zurich experience with minimally invasive, video-assisted procedures (MIVAT, MIVAP) and benefits of a recently established, highly sensitive diagnostic tool (Cholin-PET-MRI) for the detection of parathyroid adenomas/hyperplasia allowing successful focussed approaches in > 96% of cases.

The Zurich Experience in Robotic Surgery (TORS)

The DaVinci Si robot is used in Zurich since 2013 for selected TORS procedures (tumour resections of the oropharynx and supraglottic larynx, total laryngectomy and tongue base resections for selected OSA patients). A review of >60 cases over a 4 year period and a critical appraisal of the pros and cons of this surgical procedure (advantages, limitations and complications).
