Caring for persons living with dementia in long-term care can be challenging due to responsive behaviours. These behaviours, which include physical and verbal expressions, increase burden and directly affect quality of life for clients and caregivers. VR dementia simulations can facilitate learners’ understanding and empathy towards people with dementia, that is, “to see through their eyes”. The overall goal of this proof of concept was to evaluate whether using VR dementia simulation as an educational tool increases empathy towards people living with dementia and their caregivers. A 360 degree video scenario involving a gentleman living with dementia and his caregiver was filmed. The project demonstrated that immersive technology is both authentic and increases empathy towards people living with dementia and their caregivers. The potential to develop VR scenarios related to many other aspects of long-term care could revolutionize the way education is developed, standardized and delivered across the province.
