Management of Acute Pain in Preventing Chronicity
This
presentation will explore current principles of acute pain management with particular
focus on identifying risk factors for chronicity. A biopsychosocial perspective
will be discussed; one which is patient- centred and empowers the patient to
adopt a self-management approach as an active participant in their recovery.
The use of language that promotes recovery, re-assures and reduces fear of
movement will be presented together with an analysis of verbal and non-verbal
messages that may reduce compliance and prolong pain and distress. The
importance of early intervention, patient education and transformative language
and movement will be highlighted as well as the healing power of compassion and
kindness.
