There is growing recognition that deep changes are needed across the continuum of aging services but especially in long-term care, as we progress from institutional, medical models of care to social models of living.  This positive revolution is known as the “culture change” movement.  While there is consensus on the need and desire for this shift, the reality of making it happen is challenging.

The Schlegel-UWaterloo Research Institute for Aging (RIA) and Schlegel Villages began a collaborative culture change journey in 2009 guided by Appreciative Inquiry and Participatory Action Research.  This journey was captured in a Guidebook that tells the story of how residents, family members, direct support team members, and leaders from across the organizations worked together to put living first in their long-term care and retirement communities.  The Guidebook and this poster share inspiration, insights and practical strategies to assist others embarking or continuing their culture change journey.
