Acute changes in condition in the frail elderly are clinically important deviations which, without timely intervention, may lead to significant deterioration or death. Nearly 33% of frail elderly admitted to hospital from long-term care are admitted unnecessarily. Enhancing healthcare providers’ access to and retention of specialty knowledge is an important precursor to safety and care quality. This educational gamified App reinforces content for common conditions associated with emergency hospital admissions in the elderly. Through simulated cases, game mechanics and instant feedback, the App motivates learners to improve knowledge and clinical decision-making. A beta-test evaluation with 53 practical nursing students revealed improvements in knowledge, gameplay variation, ways to improve the App and the benefits of learning through the App. A key discovery was that the analytics underlying the gamification platform provide very valuable information for educators and managers to focus and evaluate their educational efforts relative to quality and performance targets.
