Dr Rob Carroll is a clinician scientist with a strong translational research record in Regulatory T cells and HLA and non HLA antibodies. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of South Australia, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine, University of Adelaide and Renal Transplant Physician at the Royal Adelaide Hospital since 2009. In 2009 he established Australia’s first renal paediatric to adult transition service and in 2013 Australia’s first Young Adult Renal Clinic (16-26 years olds). His research includes: 26 publications in peer-reviewed journals with 300 citations.
ABSTRACT Title: Transitioning From Paediatric To Adult Care
Transitioning care from paediatric to adult services is problematic for both patient and parents and indeed doctors.
In the case of renal transplantation the period from 16-26 years of age is associated with high risk of transplantation loss due to non adherence to immunosuppressive medications. Up to a third of renal transplants in this population can be lost due to non adherence to medication. Groups in Colorado and Oxford have shown that integrated transition (14-18 years) and young adult clinic (18-26 years) can achieve longterm graft loss to below 3%.
We will present data on the changes in graft loss, adherence, quality of life after the initiation of integrated transition and young adult renal clinics in Adelaide.
