Kevin Sheehy has worked across many of the disciplines involved in bringing a health technology to market, from treating patients, through regulatory approvals, clinical trials and commercial roles. He is currently consulting on projects bringing various medical devices and health related IT products to market. One of his areas of focus is incorporating health economics requirements into the product development cycle as companies are increasingly needing to demonstrate the value of their medical innovation to funders.

He has practiced as a GP in South Africa and worked in various clinical placements in UK hospitals, on moving out of clinical practice he has worked at Medsafe on pharmaceutical regulation and post-market surveillance. During 5 years working for the pharmaceutical industry and leading Medicines New Zealand he developed a deep knowledge of market access strategy and am well placed to help companies get their innovations through the multiple obstacles to ultimately benefit the patient locally and internationally.

The Health Tech Review he is currently undertaking aims to identify the size of the Health Tech opportunity for New Zealand as well as how Government and Industry can best approach the industry’s challenges.

Health Tech Industry Review Findings

Kevin has undertaken a review of the local health technology industry (medical devices and health IT companies) and will be presenting the findings. The report measured economic performance, employment, R&D spending as well as regional distribution of companies for the 2015 financial year. New Zealand exports health technologies to 116 countries and this export activity drives substantial economic activity locally, including employing highly skilled staff and spending millions on R&D activities.

Kevin also assesses the challenges and opportunities that companies identified in the review and makes suggestions for improving the performance and growth of the smaller companies moving through the pipeline. The health technology industry offers new Zealanders a path to better health and economic prosperity.
