ABSTRACT

Rheumatology Service Provision in Nelson-Marlborough
The traditional DHB-based Rheumatologist in Nelson-Marlborough DHB resigned in June 2013 principally due to concerns about the inability of the service to provide an appropriate, timely and safe follow-up service for patients on immunosuppressive medications for inflammatory arthritis.

Subsequently, a model of care consisting of GP-based clinics (serviced by interested GPSIs [GP’s with a Special Interest]) once weekly in Nelson, and once monthly in Blenheim, overseen by a Rheumatologist offering advice at point-of care, has been the model of Rheumatology service provided in Nelson-Marlborough.

This has resulted in high levels of community GP and patient satisfaction and considerable reductions in waiting times. Data outlining patient numbers seen, cost to the DHB of service provision,  and  various other outcome measures are presented.
